What version of MC do you have?

Try switching some of the playback options.

Every time I put a DVD into my computer, MC gives me the following error msg:

The DVD disk can not be accessed.  Either your system is missing some components for playing DVD video, or another application is currently using those components.

Do you have any suggestions?  I have a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-C2502 drive.

More info about my DVD drive.

ATAPI CD-ROM and DVD Drivers

Toshiba's CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives do not require any unique device drivers for Windows '95/'98/2000/XP/NT.
After installing your drive and re-booting, your system should recognize your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM.
Win '95/'98/2000/XP/NT Operating Systems support all Toshiba ATAPI CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives natively.

The DVD issue could be because you don't have any Mpeg2 decoder installed on your system which is necessary for DVD playback. Microsoft doesn't provide this and neither do we, but there should have been player software that came with your DVD drive that would install a decoder. Can you play your DVD's with another player? Which one?
You can purchase the decoder software pretty cheaply if you don't have it.

As to CD's, what happens if you try to "rip" a track? Just right click on a CD track and choose "Rip (Copy CD)" and then click the "Start" button.

No problem with ripping CDs - only playing DVDs.

I guess I assumed that MC provided any software that I needed to play DVDs.

Ok.  So I probably need this 'Mpeg2 decoder'.  Can you recommend one?

Thanks  8)

You can try the free DVD filters available here:
http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/encoding_plugin.html
Look for the link "Free DVD Filters" on this page. You need to run the small "regfilters.bat" file after downloading.

For $15.00 you can purchase the WinDVD decoder filter package from this link:
http://www.intervideo.com/products/custom/ms/windowsxp/media_pack.jsp
It's called "DVD XPack".
