Missing channels in channel scan
« on: June 09, 2019, 10:36:06 am »

I just installed MC25 as a new user, but despite several attempts cannot get all the UK channels.
I'm using an Intel i5 HP laptop on which Media Portal 2 (MP2) runs quite happily using a dual DVB-T USB PlusTV stick.
After first stopping the MP2-Server service, I get the following results...
Channels tuned via JRiver...
 see attachment 'JRiver Manage Channels.jpg'
…, in which you can see lots of gaps in the channel numbering, e.g. channels 2, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, …, etc.
Compare this with a list of the channels available in Media Portal 2 using the same hardware...
 see attachments 'MP2 Channels ([1-3]).jpg'
..., in which you can see that only channel 7 (the decommissioned BBC THREE) is missing between 1 and 50.
I’m not sure it will be of much help, but just in case information relating to the missing channels might be of interest I’ve also attached a zip file containing tuning details of TV channels and Radio Stations from MP2.
Meanwhile, I shall continue to use MP2 before I purchase a JRiver license...

The first thing that comes to mind is the frequency table.  Do the missing channels seem to be in certain groups?  If we are missing a frequency in the frequency table, all channels that are carried on that frequency would be missing.

Here are the frequencies we use for UK:

Code: [Select]
    <Country Name="United Kingdom" CountryCode="44" NetworkType="DVB-T" Bandwidth="8">
<Channel Freq="306000"/>
<Channel Freq="462000"/>
<Channel Freq="474000"/>
<Channel Freq="482000"/>
<Channel Freq="490000"/>
<Channel Freq="498000"/>
<Channel Freq="506000"/>
<Channel Freq="514000"/>
<Channel Freq="522000"/>
<Channel Freq="530000"/>
<Channel Freq="538000"/>
<Channel Freq="546000"/>
<Channel Freq="554000"/>
<Channel Freq="562000"/>
<Channel Freq="570000"/>
<Channel Freq="578000"/>
<Channel Freq="586000"/>
<Channel Freq="594000"/>
<Channel Freq="602000"/>
<Channel Freq="610000"/>
<Channel Freq="618000"/>
<Channel Freq="626000"/>
<Channel Freq="634000"/>
<Channel Freq="642000"/>
<Channel Freq="650000"/>
<Channel Freq="658000"/>
<Channel Freq="666000"/>
<Channel Freq="674000"/>
<Channel Freq="682000"/>
<Channel Freq="690000"/>
<Channel Freq="698000"/>
<Channel Freq="706000"/>
<Channel Freq="714000"/>
<Channel Freq="722000"/>
<Channel Freq="730000"/>
<Channel Freq="738000"/>
<Channel Freq="746000"/>
<Channel Freq="754000"/>
<Channel Freq="762000"/>
<Channel Freq="770000"/>
<Channel Freq="778000"/>
<Channel Freq="786000"/>
<Channel Freq="794000"/>

Yes, that [the frequency] did come to mind, in fact it was mentioned previously in this or another thread.  That's why I included the extra zipped file with the tuning details for TV and Radio channels from Media Portal 2. Looking in that at the frequency for the missing channel "BBC TWO", you can see that it's the same as that for "BBC One Lon" (490000), so that seems like a red herring.
Is it possible that it could be something like matched / mismatched ServiceId vs. TransponderId?
I noticed that these are the same for "BBC ONE Lon" (4164), which JRiver found, but different for "BBC TWO" (4287 vs. 4164).
But no, that can't be right either, as "ITV" has different values too (8261 vs. 8197), but IS found by JRiver. Doh!
Is there any mileage in loading the data from the MP2 XML file into a spreadsheet to be able to sort it and more easily look for inconsistencies / patterns / …?  My difficulty is I don't really know what I'm looking for because I don't know how the data is used to populate a tuning 'database', and anyway it may not be complete (? according to a comment about how UK frequencies have been messed with to allow mobile phone operators more bandwidth ?)

Hi Yaobing.  I've been using JRiver for quite a while now, and recently I saw an ad for new channels in the area.  The commercial said to scan for the channels, and when I did....BOOM.  Zero channels were being scanned.  I thought it might have been another program I installed, so I did what I always do:  Reinstall Windows!!  So after that, I immediately set up JRiver 24 (the most current version I've bought), and still nothing.  Zero scanned channels.  I've included the log file here.  If you could help me, I'd be eternally grateful.  For now, I'm stuck using the HDHomeRun software (god awful).  I knew I liked JRiver, but now that I don't have it, I'm thinking it was PERFECT for me (which I always knew it was.  But now I see how bad other software is).

EDIT:  I forgot to mention that I also downloaded and tried to scan for channels in ver 25, but the same thing occured.

You have a different issue from what has been discussed in this thread.

ATSC channel scan is broken by the latest Microsoft updates on Windows 10.  I am still investigating a possible work around (it is possible that Microsoft stopped supporting some of the methods that we are using, and we need to find alternative methods).

It's also possible that Microsoft just broke Windows.  Hopefully, they will fix the problem.

Wow.  Thank you so much for getting to this so quickly.  Sorry for the off-topic post, but I didn't know this was a different thing than what other people are talking about.  I'll keep an eye out for the work-around.

Ref:  "ATSC channel scan is broken by the latest Microsoft updates on Windows 10.  I am still investigating a possible work around (it is possible that Microsoft stopped supporting some of the methods that we are using, and we need to find alternative methods)."

THANK YOU JRiver administration for the above quoted forum comment.  After contacting Hauppauge, Microsoft, and JRiver, I was thinking Windows 10 Build 1903 and Media Center 25 would not be able to receive over the air ATSC channels for a long time as I was getting nowhere fast in asking each for information on the problem.

I am glad the problem is now being examined and hopeful there will be a suitable fix in the future.  Until then, I'm using open source Sage TV 9.2.1 x64 along with the Schedules Direct EPG with my Hauppauge WinTV -quadHD tuner cards.

I still love JRiver for the excellent audio component it has (I use it with an ASUS Essence STX II/JRC MUSES 01 & 02 Op Amps, B&O H6 Gen 2 Headphones combination for GREAT SOUND!).  Thank you for the comments which now give some hope the TV problem with the ATSC channels will be worked.

I started having the issue of "EPG loading failed. Execution of external program was successful, but no data was loaded. Will retry in 31 minutes." Looks like its been happening a couple days. I did just update to 1903, so i reverted back to the previous version....problem still persists.

Probably related?

MediaCenter 25.0.71 FIXED the problem with Windows 10 Build 1903 I was experiencing on multiple systems with Hauppauge WinTV-QuadHD tuners that could not see available OTA channels in the setup process.  Now, everything is back to normal.  I hope this version also has fixed the problem for people with other configurations and tuners.  THANK YOU, J River!

Re: Missing channels in channel scan (FYI for MC24 Television users)
« Reply #16 on: October 23, 2019, 05:16:08 pm »

FYI for MC24 Television users upgrading to MC25/26

If you are an MC24 user and, like me, decided to purchase the upgrade to MC25/26 a word of warning.  Do not attempt to upgrade a MC24 machine. It will most likely break channel scanning and there is no fix at this time. I would advise you to do any testing on a machine you are not depending on for television watching or recording.

If you have already broken your machine and you use Silicondust HDHomerun tuners (like the dual tuner) you can download the HDHomerun viewer which now supports DVR (free). It will allow you to watch or record TV without JRiver Media Center.

In my testing I have found that JRiver television use will randomly leave the tuners in a state of "Initializing"  If you exit JRiver entirely the tuners will recover themselves (no need to unplug power, etc).
