Best way of converting uhd->1080p offline
« on: June 29, 2019, 05:28:26 pm »

Hi there,

I got recently some uhd-mkv files for testing. Unfortunately, my graphic card is not capable of playback to my projector (JVC RS52 or so, in europe known as DLA X500).
So, I tried converting to 1080p offline. And I'm not so pleased with the result/durations.

With MC25, I didn't get 1080p/24fps AND full surround sound, only with stereo.

The software xmedia-recode worked after some tests (you need to set a high bitrate of about 25Mps for a good quality picture). But this leads to converting times of 16 hours on a i5-3450 with 16GB RAM and ssd...

Any other suggestions?

Cheers,

Thorsten

If you value your time and are able to fit a new graphic card with HW h265 decoding to your case that would be my choice. There is no shortcuts and transcoding will take time especially with your current hardware. Of course if this is just for testing then you just need to spend time on encoding. I'm using Megui myself.

its not just resolution that needs to be scaled down in 4k ... tonrvmapping from bt2020 to rec709 (aka HDR to SDR) needs to be done too ... very time consuming and trial error with settings

imo too ... since decided to go 4k .. might as well get decent gpu that can play 4k hdr in the future ... and meanwhile can downscale and do tone mapping to output at HD using madVR

Thanks for your input. I have an old Radeon HD7950 graphics card, fanless. I hadn't in focus that the card itself can't do H265-decoding, this sounds plausible for me.

So, I should really consider an upgrade. The Zotac GTX1070 mini is often available for a good price and a friend has it, so I will do some testing and then upgrade.
