Raspberry Pi 4
JimH:
The Pi 4 won't be available until July 19th or so.
Micro Center had some this weekend. We got two 2GB models today. Definitely faster.
Performance should be improved, in general. 2GB should be enough.
bob:
Just got a couple of the 2GB models today.
A bench is here:

They are about twice as fast as a 3B+ for our use and OpenGL works properly on them now so that Theater View works fine.

Power problem with some cables:

whoareyou:
Using the PI4 is looking very good for me.
Setup:
PI3(OpenMediaVault for file serving) -> PI4 (MC install) -> Parasound HINT USB dac or Gizmo on tablet or OPPO 205
Parasound:
USB DAC is selectable playback device
2 Channel DSD plays (bit) perfectly
6 Channel DSD plays downmixed to 2 channel (slight delay for processing)
OPPO:
DLNA Streaming to my oppo 205 works perfectly (original format)
Gizmo:
Streaming to Gizmo with transcoding works (including multichannel DSD). Of course there's a little more delay going over wireless - but it's not bad
Looking really good.
Caveats are:
I haven't used this too long.
Stuff happens
Haven't tried streaming or playing to multiple devices at same time
But... a while back, I did try this on a RPI3 and it was not useable for any use case.
I'll let you know if I encounter any issues
BTW - Also have Logitech Media Server installed on the PI4 .... Haven't tried streaming from both servers at same time, but that's for another day.
I installed desktop version of latest from Raspberry site. Followed quick setup guide in this group.
Thanks!
bob:
One thing I noticed while using it to do compiles with all 4 cores, it will start thermal limiting within a minute or so when using just a passive heatsink.
Compiling MC was only about 10% faster than on a Pi3 until I added a small fan which prevented thermal limiting and nearly halved the compile time.
So, if you are going to be doing anything that uses all of the cores in anything other than a short burst you'll need to consider the cooling...
