Alright here's a description of what I'm trying to accomplish.  I have a Windows XP machine running MEdia Center flawlessly...i've got about 3500 files (mixed audio and photos).  This is my primary computer at home.

I realized I have a perfectly good windows 98 computer acting as a doorstop so I figure I'll run media Server from there for my tivo and so I can connect to my library from work.  I share my music tree from the XP machine to the win98 machine using windows file sharing

I Installed Media Center on the windows 98 machine and proceed to do a media import.  about 70% of the import works fine, the other 30% imports but the files are broken.  For some reason Media Center sees them well enough to get the name and filename detail but no other tags and when trying to play them it cannot access them,

Is this the best method to migrate? (I figured a backup and restore of the library wouldnt work because the file paths would be different, going from c:\my music\... to e:\...)  But I figured the tagging would migrate over with an import...and like I said this worked for a large portion.

No matter what I try I cannot get the other 30% of the file sto import properly! (They still work just fine on the winXP machine).

What gives?

If you run MC locally on the Win98 machine, do the files import?

Hmmm, maybe I didn't explain this very well.  I have two machines (XP and 98).  I run MC on the XP machine to great success with nearly 4000 songs (and another 250 or so cds to be encoded).  My 98 machine is doing nothing so i figured why not use it as the MC server while still using the XP machine for file storage (much bigger HD).

I installed MC under 98, and mapped c:\My Music under XP to e:\ under 98.  

I then performed a full Import Media under 98, searching the E:\ tree.  MC found all files without a hitch, however for approximately 30% of these files the tags were not imported properly, MC doesn't properly recognize the files at all.  I can't play them, I can't update the tags on them, nothing).  

To JimH:  I am running MC locally on the win98 machine...the idea here is to stop using MC for anything on the XP machine (they are physically in the same location and i am primarily using MC to connect up to my tivo and from work, I rarely use MC for playback at home).  When trying to play the files in question on the win98 machine I get a message telling me to check the path of the files.  I do this and the path is correct.

I'd love to get this working as I intend to use the win98 as a low-end (very low!) server, running Personal Web Server,  Cerberus FTP server, and Media Center Media Server. This will free up resources on the XP machine to server in the workstation role..

Does the limitation have anything to do with the file system? On XP, I'm running NTFS and on 98 I'm running FAT32.  The mapped drive is obviously NTFS, I give the 98 machine full write permissions.

You say you are "mapping" the C:\My Music on the 98 machine to the XP's E: drive (where I assume all the music is).  If you mean by that you're using the "Map Network Drive" option under Network Neighborhood - Why are you using that?  It's mainly useful for giving network access to older (or poorly designed) programs that can't otherwise access network resources.  But MC can browse to any shared network resources.  So...

Just import directly from the XP machine.  On 98 machine go to the "Import Media Files" Window and click the "..." box next to the "Search" pull down.  Then browse to the XP machine's E: drive.  Obviously, you will need to have the E: drive set as a shared drive.

If I'm misunderstanding what you have tried, ignore me.
