Missing files

for some unknown reason, MC24 is removing files from my library during import against the settings in Options.

Options settings as follows:

Library & Folders -->
Configure Auto Import -->
Update for External Changes -->
Fix Broken Links: YES (protect files on missing drives)

Yet, in spite of these settings MC is deleting files on my USB drive from my library!
I have double checked my options settings, I have reinstalled MC24
I have tried to create a fresh new library,
and I have restored a back-up library from before this began to occur

but is continues to remove my files regardless.

PLEASE help.

Correct Jim, and thus it did not delete anything . . .  as I stated it REMOVED THE FILES FROM THE LIBRARY . . . . they are still safely on my drive as it was not connected to the laptop at the time.


BUT, the files should remain in the library when the drive is unplugged, As they have in the past, ALWAYS.

So, umm . . .  any suggestions?
This used to work as expected, and now it does not.

If I run an Import without first plugging in my USB drive MC will remove the files on the USB drive from my library (setting says they should be protected).

This makes MC very cumbersome for me to use as I can only run an import when the USB drive is plugged in.
Re-importing 3.5 TB of data takes entirely too long to do repeatedly!

Last I plugged in the USB drive and ran an Import and all was well . . . . until the next time I try to Import while the USB drive is unplugged (which is most of the time when not at home)


So, where do I go from here?

If MC is removing files from your library even when "Fix broken links" = NO, then that is something JRiver will have to address...

I'm afraid you won't get much joy from the developers. MC24 development finished ages ago.

But I'm pretty sure this issue isn't happening with other people, on the version you are on, MC24.0.78. That functionality has been pretty reliable for a long time.

WER has covered all the settings and issues, which you seem to understand and have tested anyway.

So, it has got to be something strange about your environment. Or maybe just something awry in the Windows Registry.

The only other thing I can think of is that if Windows, and hence MC, think that the drive is not removable, and is treating it as an internal drive, those settings may not be working correctly.

Look at the properties of the drive under Device Manager. Specifically, is the drive set to "Policies > Quick Removal" to disable write caching? Populate the fields on the Volume tab of Properties. Is the Type set to Removable?



If that leads nowhere, then drastic measures are required I guess. Normally I wouldn't recommend it, but I think a complete uninstall and reinstall may be your only chance.


Make sure you have a good Library backup with all file records intact first.
Uninstall and remove all settings.
Reboot.
Plug in your USB drive and reinstall.
Restore the Library Backup
Test the "No" and "Yes - Protect files on Missing Drives" settings again.
