There's usually a new major version released every year. So if you get a master license right now, it'll be a MC25 master license however once MC26 is released, that license won't work on it without upgrading.

Also, the master license lasts forever meaning it doesn't expire or become invalid (unless a key is shared public, then it'll probably be deactivated). So that means in 5+ years from now if you have a MC25 master license, you can download MC25 from the old versions wiki article and use your license with it and it'll work fine.
