if I choose to playback - via DirectSound probably - into WDM, is it going to use Windows Mixer?

DirectSound will always use the windows mixer. You can use the WDM driver also through WASAPI in which case it can be bitperfect.

That's what I thought :-(
What is the purpose then using VB Cable Hi-Fi Cable or similar, if the application (say, Spotify) does not anything else than DirectSound?

Even if an application only offers DirectSound, the choice is still DirectSound and nothing, or DirectSound and MC DSP, thats something many people like.
