Media Server & iPod
« on: May 06, 2003, 07:01:16 pm »

I could have sworn I did this before, but it doesn't seem to be working now.

I am using the Media Server to stream my mp3 collection from another PC.  Previously I was also using that media library to synch with my iPod.  I hadn't done a synch in quite some time.  So I downloaded the latest MC, formatted the iPod, and created some new playlists.  MC refuses to synch the mp3's.

If I do a synch against the local media library it works without any problems.  I'm not sure if it's this version of MC or the fact that I also recently updated my iPod the 1.26 firmware.

Renegade,

I don't think you could have done this before. The ability to transfer files from a Media Server was not implemented.  I need to add this ability into the Plugin and it was on my todo list for the day. Check back later and I will hopefully have a fix posted.

Renegade,

I posted a new Plugin (v 9.0.17) which should enable this. It will be automatically installed as part of build 9.0.172 when it is released. Until then, you can use 9.0.171 and then get the Plugin from the Plugins page.

Connect to it with computer B

Connect my iPod to computer B

Sync my iPod with songs from the media server on computer A??

Holy crap, Steve!  That's pretty cool!

How does it work, then?  Does computer B cache a copy temporarily?  How's the sync speed, about the same as normal?

That's pretty neat... I dunno if I'd implement it at home (my roomate uses WMP), but just the thought that it's possible... that's pretty cool!

Hmmmm.....I just posted a question in the forum about what I think was this exact problem but using an iPaq PocketPC.

Is there a chance that the plugin for the PocketPC will be fixed, too, to allow me to download to the iPaq using Media Server and files on another computer?

*Is* this the same problem (see my other post...)?

Kurt,

Yes, the file is temporarily cached.  The synch speed is a bunch slower because of the networking involved.

rjcrum,

If your PocketPC shows up as a removable drive, then yes it will be fixed as well.

SteveG...

Just to clarify, since I just tried to download the new plugin and it failed :-(

Should I be using the   iPaq - 9.0.02 plugin dated 5/2/2003 or the   Portable Drive - 9.0.17  plugin dated 5/7/2003 or the PDA - 9.0.01 plugin dated 2/19/2003?

I have an iPaq 3955 PocketPC PDA....and I just realized you said "...If your PocketPC shows up as a removable drive.." it would be fixed.  Given the dates on the above plugins, it would appear that you are referencing the "Portable Drive" plugin, while the one I was using was the "PDA" plugin.

So....what's the difference between using the iPaq, the Portable Drive or the PDA plugin?  What's the best one to drag and drop music to the SD storage card on my iPaq PDA?  Can all three exist....and how does it figure out which one to us?

Currently, my iPaq shows up as "Windows CE" under the "CD, DVD and Handhelds" category at the top of the MC heirarchy.

rjcrum,

Thanks for the information.  Based on the information you just gave me, you should use the PDA plugin. I need to modify this to make it do what you are after. I will do this today and repost the Plugin.

Ok, I managed to get the updated plugin installed.  But I still seem to be getting the same error.  When I try to synch the files, a "Failed to find the source file" error pops up.

It's not a problem to go back to using a drive letter to synch with.  It would be REALLY nice to be able to use the media server though.

I would suggest reading the iPod support thread carefully.

I'll close this one.
