Renderer Problems in MC25
« on: September 07, 2019, 12:42:16 pm »

First of all, my English is a little bit rusty. I am from Germany. Hello, I also installed MC25 on my laptop in my study and would like to play my music over the SonosBoxes = Renderer. The configuration is as follows: The laptop/MC accesses a NAS drive where the corresponding music files are stored. The data flow runs completely via router via LAN. Playback starts via the renderer and stops after 5 seconds without sound. Playback via the laptop boxes via MC with Zone=Control works. Playback directly via the Sonosapp also works. Only not via the renderer (Sonos boxes) in the MC. I have already successfully realized playback via the renderer boxes in the study in the living room with a laptop/MC25. The big difference is that the music is played from a local external USB drive and not from the NAS drive. In addition, the laptop sends the music signals via WLAN to the render boxes in the study. These are connected to the router via LAN. What am I doing wrong?

In MC Right click on the Renderer and select DLNA Controller Options the "Disable SetNext Support"

What format are your media files?

The MC server default setting is to Always Convert music media tracks to a format called L16 (no header). The L16 format is the common “must play” format that all renderers should be able to support. — HOWEVER, Sonos is the single manufacturer who does not support L16 !! (go figure..)

Your solution is (probably) to set the MC server to send Original (no conversion) or perhaps alternatively to Always Convert it to some other format than L16 (such as WAV / PCM (with header))..

Yes, reading that again 5 seconds of silence before stopping is a sure sign that the renderer cannot play the file type. I see that exact symptom with my own setup when I send it files it can’t play.

Hello, thank you very much for your interest in my contribution. Regarding the question which format my files have the following: the predominant part has the format WAV. But I don't think the problem is that I have a laptop with MC25 in my living room and play my files there. These files are then played back over the network in my study via the renderer = SonosBoxes. This works fine and I can control everything via JRemote. Only in my study of the local laptop with MC25 it is not possible to play the music over the renderer. The playback stops after 5 seconds without sound. This configuration runs completely over the LAN network.

As I said before, look in MCs DLNA server settings for audio, and change the setting from Always Convert L16 to something else.

Hello, I managed it thanks to your help. I made the following setting in the Media Network section of the Client Options in the Audio Conversion section:
 1. conversion on demand
 2. Encoder PCM 24 Bit.
Now it works with MC25 and the SonosBoxes in the study.
In the living room on the laptop with MC 25 I have the following setting (Streaming to study/sonosBoxes):
1. conversion on demand
2. MP3 encoder with high bandwidth.
This setting worked from the beginning.
Thanks again for your support.

Andrew does this mean that strictly speaking Sonos is not DLNA compliant? Do they do that as a point of difference?

Indeed. That is correct.

Do they do that as a point of difference?

I have no idea.

Hello, there is a new problem on this topic. I cannot play WAV files with a sampling rate of 48000 hz. The settings in the DLNA library server are under Audio:
 1. specified audio formats only on    demand.
2. format: PCM 16-bit.
WAV files do not cause any problems with the sampling rate 44100 hz. I copied the 48khz files I mentioned years ago in an unknowing way.

I assume you are still talking about your Sonos boxes? If so, could you please download the DMRA from my sig, run the test, and post the renderer report here?

Hello,
I have attached the corresponding protocol file. I hope that I have understood everything correctly. By the way, playing WAV files with 16 bit 44.1 Khz works. My music library contains about 900 files with a sampling rate of 48Khz of about 9000 files in total.

Hello, it was the wrong file I posted. The report concerned the paired box (34). I'm enclosing the correct file (68). My knowledge is unfortunately not so good that I can judge whether it makes a difference between the paired box and the actual renderer box (68).

Ok, the renderer report tells us three things..

1) the error message “Play test file result=Play success => Start Ok / Stop Ok / Subscribe error” tells us that you probably need to right click on the renderer in MC and check “Ignore Transport Events”.

2) the renderer definitely does NOT support L16 PCM No Header; so in MC’s server settings you need to NOT select conversion to L16 etc. (and possible alternatives would be “Original” or Convert to WAV, FLAC, AIFF, (to name a few)

3) unfortunately the report does not give any indication about why the renderer won’t play WAV at 48kHz. So my two suggestions are a) set MC server to Always Convert to (say) FLAC instead of WAV, or b) use the MC DSP plugin to down convert 48kHz tracks to 44.1kHz..

I hope that helps..

Hello, hooray it works. I have set the MC server to "specified format" and set the format to "PCM 16 Bit". I have set the client options to "do not convert" and the format to 16 bit. I still have a question about the inputs, what are the relevant inputs for the server or the client options? In addition, unfortunately the donate function does not work in your analysis tool. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks for your efforts.
PS: I have set the conversion from 48 kHz to 44.1 kHz in the DSP tool, which has an effect at all, since this only affects the local engine. These questions only serve my general understanding.

The client options are (I guess) not relevant in your case, since they tell MC what to do in the case that something else is pushing a track to MC on the PC that you are on.

The relevant options are the DLNA server options, which tell MC what to do when it is pushing to a non MC renderer. As is your case.

I am delighted you got it working. Don’t worry about the donate function; I think I do this rather for “love” than for “money”.. :)
