MVC 3D and Bitsteaming Help - and now licence!!!
« on: September 28, 2019, 05:48:54 pm »

Ok so i decided since Nvidia killed windows support for 3d to move to Linux. I hear its awesome anyway. I heard that JRiver Media Center sorts this.

I download trial and have 30 days. i place in my settings bitstreaming via hdmi and can't find 3d options.... but ... on playing a file system crashes.

More fiddling .... system crashes.

I want to reset settings to try find problem. You cant, need to uninstall.

I decide to uninstall (linux way via terminal) and reinstall. settings still unchanged.

I do a proper uninstall (via terminal) found somewhere on this forum. i reinstall and ... trial period over! when i had 29 days left to fix this issue  :-(

No worries i request extension of trial and ... "There was a problem requesting trial extension... check email...". my email is fine and entered correctly, i tried others but no luck.

Please help. I am happy to buy the product if it will allow me to output TrueHD via Bitstreaming and it can play proper 3d (frame packed) now on linux.

I could be wrong, but I don't think any of the 3D stuff works on Linux (or Mac) even with the proprietary Nvidia drivers, but works only on Windows with older Nvidia drivers since Nvidia has dropped 3D support in the newer drivers. I guess if I am wrong and the Nvidia proprietary drivers support MVC 3D on Linux, it likely doesn't anymore because of 3D being dropped by Nvidia in the newer drivers (like the Windows drivers - Mac users are out of luck there though).

Not only that, I seem to recall 3D in MC only works on Windows too. I actually would be HIGHLY surprised if 3D worked on Linux or Mac.

Ouch ... that would be sad.
Thing is 3D is supported in Bino and Mplayer using OpenGL in Linux, but you need to be a bit of a Linux expert as the UI and bug solving is not as easy as i thought it would be.

I hope that JRiver supports it, i cant find anywhere the list of supported formats under Linux, I figured they should offer the same on all platforms.

Pretty sure since MC for Windows uses Hendrik's LAV filters (which are Windows only), it gains the MVC 3D support from that in Red October. But since LAV filters require DirectShow (which is, as you probably guessed) it's limited to Windows only.

Not even sure if MC for Linux or Mac supports what's needed to get MVC 3D playback working with OpenGL and/or FFMPEG and compatible drivers - if it's supported in the Nvidia proprietary driver, you'd probably have to use old drivers which may or may not work with newer Linux distros in the future. Also pretty sure I recall reading it might rely on VDPAU too, can't recall at the moment. In my honest opinion abandoning Windows because of that was probably hasty. Not only would 3D support likely would require support in the Nvidia proprietary drivers which is no longer there like the Windows drivers, finding older drivers and using those on Linux distro and maintaining those is much more difficult than just installing older Nvidia drivers that support 3D on Windows which is much, MUCH easier to do, of course, depending on the Linux distro used.

Hendrik or Bob would likely know more (and can correct me if I'm wrong as the video side of things isn't my forte at the moment).
