Ripping Atmos Audio from Bluray Discs
« on: September 26, 2019, 01:32:47 pm »

I've just begun successfuly using DVDfab to copy a couple blueray audio movies complete with menus. Very slick play back using JRiver!

I have a few Bluray music Audio discs and with Abbey Road coming out tomorrow, I'd like to be able to rip the atmos audio from the disc intact to then play back via JRiver.

Before I start experimenting I thought i would ask if others have already done this successfully. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

If you use MC's "Convert" function, there is a "Convert video to audio" that will then let you extract the Audio out of the video as your choice of format (eg FLAC, APE etc).  The issue is you will lose the "Atmos" part of the original DTS-MA track but you will end up with the 96/24 core audio.  Keep in mind that to play Atmos or DTS:X audio you have to Bitstream from MC anyway as there is no PC based decoder for these formats and it has to be done by the AVR.

If you want to "break up" the audio into individual tracks you may want to look at the 2nd post this thread - https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,106802.0.html

Thx for your response. However that’s not a good solution as i want to maintain the Atmos package in tact. Streaming is fine to allow my processor to decode.

Using DVD fab, the DVD Extractor will allow my to tip the True HD 7.1 but I’m not sure if it retains the data to preserve the Atmos for playback through to my audio processor. Was hoping someone here had experience with retrieving Atmos music for playback streaming using jriver

I did some quick tests (using an Atmos Movie Sound Track), and I could:
- extract the TrueHD+Atmos track just fine - but the raw audio files do not play in MC at all
- mux the TrudHD+Atmos track to MKA, M2TS containers just fine - but unlike the original M2TS when playing these in MC it is NOT bitstreamed but is instead decoded.

Hendrik may be able to comment more but I don't think this approach will do what you want.....

but... the good news is you could just use the main M2TS (or existing BD Playback) just fine.  By extracting the audio what are you hoping for anyway (eg Space Saving?)

Thanks

Have you tried using MakeMKV to rip the disc to MKV format?  Then mkvmerge can easily extract the audio trace totally intact.

Yup - but unless there is a Video Stream in the container as well, then the Audio is decoded by MC even if it Bitstreaming is set.

DVDFab will rip to MKV passthrough format.

I think the OP wants to extract just the Audio.  Easy to do but MC will not then Bitstream these to the AVR.

Understood, my comment was specifically in response to using MakeMKV as theres no need when the capability already exists in DVDFab

Well, it seems like the important question is this then:  What formats can contain Atmos intact, and of those, which will MC bitstream when there is no video track?  If the answer is none then the OP is out of luck for a pure solution.

Seems like an unfortunate limitation that MC won't bitstream MKA properly, but maybe Hendrik could comment on that.

The OP might have to compromise and mux the MKA with a low bitrate all black video stream (one could be manufactured).  Then at least MC could play it.

Maybe configure MC to launch an external program to play the MKA?

Beyond that I'm out of ideas, sorry.

I don't have this particular title, but all my BD-Audio discs are simply a Static Image with Audio and these bitstream fine.

....and FYI - keeping the ATMOS meta data is easy.  All my test muxing kept it (according to Media Info anyway).

Thank you all for your replys. Very helpful.

The new Abbey Road Release includes an Atmos mix among other items on the bluray. What I’m trying to achieve is doing the same thing as if I ripped only the sound track of a surround concert video.....only the audio so I can then play it back thru JR without using my projector. Just to enjoy the music.

I was able to rip it even preserving each chapter or song track. I tool believe I saw the atmos info but wJR didn’t even recognize the files to import them.

I have copied the entire disc in ios and can easily play what I want but will first need to power up projector to use the menu. Then I can turn the projector off and enjoy the music. But, of course, when I simply want to listen to it it would be easier if I could just select the tracks as I would any other rip. There maybe a way but I suspect there may not be yet.

Thanks again for you help. If someone figures it out I’d be interested!

While I could not get the OP's Beatles release, I did get the INKS Kick 30 with Atmos.  As I expected, it is similar to the (now defunct) High Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-ray in that while it is a BD, it only adds a Static Image and a Menu for song selection.

MC played the ATMOS tracks on the INKS Kick 30 disc without issue in both Menu and Title Playback mode.  Edit: There really is no point remuxing the "Audio" out of the M2TS file as the "Video" component is small.  The main M2TS on this disc is 12GB of which the "Video" track is about 1.6GB.  Just remuxing the ATMOS track produces a 2.5GB Audio File, as as reported earlier these don't bitstream from MC.

Thanks for all of your efforts on this jmone. Everything I’ve done has been unsuccessful to in getting the atmos to my orocessor.

The good thing is, with my ios copy, when i use jremote to play this it defaults to the Atmos mix and plays properly delivery the Atmos mix without the need to use the bluray menu. Of course, I cannot select individual tracks but simply using the the next or orevious track buttons allows me to switch tracks if desired.
