Vocals dropping out
« on: November 03, 2019, 07:46:19 am »

Media center is dropping the vocals in my library songs.  It's almost acting like a karaoke machine as all I get are the instruments.  Does anyone know what might be causing this and what the fix is?

Sounds like a channel setup issue.  If you are using 5.1 audio, "no vocals" sounds like the center channel is not being played.

What's your setup in terms of speakers and media?   How do you have MC configured in terms of channel setup?

Windows Control Panel > Sounds has a test.

Try a search for the way the OS handles multi-channel and testing.

You could try forcing stereo output in MC (DSP Studio) or on your receiver.

Thanks, where do I find channel setup in MC?

Player > DSP > Studio > Output Format > Channels > Channels > (set real number of speaker channels here)

But before you set that, note what it's set to now.  Also, do you have this "no vocals" issue with all songs?  Have you tried a regular stereo two channel song?

The issue could also be in your receiver.  It might have an odd surround mode selected, or a strange channel configuration of it's own.

Thanks.  The setting was "source number of channels".  I was not having the problem with every CD, however, I had it through my audio equipment and when listening with headphones thru an iPad.

That last post was a mouthful!

So your problem setup is on an ipad.  Presumably running JRemote?  The DSP settings do not affect JRemote's local output to the device it is running on (the ipad).

I would test the same ipad, same headphones, and use a different source.  The symptom you are describing (no vocals) is very similar to what happens when one of the wires in your headphones breaks.

If you get the same problem, on the same ipad, with the same headphones, using a different music source (like Amazon music, or ITunes, etc) then it's the headphones, the cable, or the ipad.

If it works fine with ITunes, but does not with JRemote, then something else is going on.

blgentry,

I was not clear.  I had the same problem on two different systems - my main audio equipment ( Krell Connect music streamer, McIntosh processor, amps, big speakers, etc.) AND while using an iPad with headphones.  So no, the problem wasn't my iPad.  It seemed to be fixed, however, I just installed the latest MC 25 pushed to me today and it quits after a few seconds so I can't say the problem has totally gone away.
