Finding files whose names are too long and failed to import
« on: October 30, 2019, 03:08:14 pm »

I am using windows 10 and have my CDs (a few thousand) ripped to a hard drive on a NAS. When I create a library and import, when done, I get a message that 400+ files could not be imported as their names were too long.

Is there a simple way to find those files? Ideally I could sort by length of filename in windows and shorten the longest names, but I can't find such a function, although that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Or maybe there is a way for MC 25 to tell what those files are?

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Go to Tools>General>Advanced and tick the Support extra long filenames (experimental) option and then try an import.

When you run an autoimport you will see a details button in the bottom left section of the screen. Click that and you will get full details of all files skipped or not imported for some reason (such as filename too long), you can copy this to notepad for later reference - assuming the advice given in my previous post fails to work.

Go to Windows file explorer

Find the album folder Rename,
cut the name, Rename to X
find the long filenames as per the import report and truncate them
Back to folder Rename from X by pasting what you had cut originally
Rerun auto import
Check import report

Repeat if you missed any

Sounds long winded but it works ....
