Help - Media Server.
« on: May 03, 2003, 09:31:03 am »

I have a new system setup and it works fine inside my house behind my hardware firewall(D-link 704p).  I have attached a client and it plays music.  I am trying to access my files via the internet remotly.  I had installed the latest software on both sides (9.0.168) and set the firewall to "DMZ" which passes everthing it gets to my media server - no port filtering what so ever.  The remote client appears to communicate - as I can see the login attempt - but then I get the following message:
05/03/03 13:14:44 - Current Connections: 1
05/03/03 13:14:44 - sharing thread started
05/03/03 13:14:44 - sending 400
05/03/03 13:14:44 - Invalid Media Server protocol attempted.
05/03/03 13:14:44 - ready for another connection
05/03/03 13:14:44 - sharing thread exiting
05/03/03 13:14:45 - received a connection
05/03/03 13:14:45 - Current Connections: 1
05/03/03 13:14:45 - ready for another connection
05/03/03 13:14:45 - sharing thread started
05/03/03 13:14:45 - sending 400
05/03/03 13:14:45 - Invalid Media Server protocol attempted.
05/03/03 13:14:45 - sharing thread exiting

Then it hangs up.

Operating system on both sides = XP
Ram on both side =512
CPU on both sides =2.6ghz
Fully service packed and patched.

DO you have all your other apps running through the firewall?  I have problems using my Netgear Wireless Router when I set my main PC as the DMZ zone.  Nothing seems to properly communicate with it.  When I removed it from the DMZ, and manually set all the ports I needed, it works fine.

I have since removed my firewall from the mix.
The computer operating on a 192.168.0.X subnet streams media just fine.  On the internet - I cant get connect - I am hoping to get another computer to test with later tonight.  Any thoughs would be appreciated though

ok,   I fixed it.  It involved going into the settings are connecting it to the proper library so it now works.  Thanks to all who tried.

p.s. - my firewall is back up, the DMZ is turned off and I am only passing 1 port from the firewall to the media server.

HI Phantan,

Can you give more details? The error message looks like the firewall was changing the data stream somehow. How exactly did you fix this?

I believe the setting that fixed the problem was:
file
   Library
         Library manager
               Add   [enter settings here]

Then I deleted the default, but I dont think that made a diffence.
I will be doing my testing later and nail it down.
