I can no longer play CDs using MC (9.0.161). I first started having problems with CD playback/ripping with MJ8, but had the problem licked a few builds back (using MC9) after JohnT helped me out abundantly.

His last suggestion, which is what finally fixed my biggest problems, was to delete the following reg key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Jukebox\CD Reader.

However, with the latest builds, the problem began again. MC9 detects my CD, looks it up on Yadb, fills in all the tag info nicely . . . and then buffers endlessly, never playing the track. In analog mode, the selected track will play "live" (so I have no control over the track--can't even stop it, short of ejecting the disk), and then stops at the end of the track.

So I went back into my registry and deleted the above key. Only this time, instead of fixing the problem, things got worse . . . now, instead of just buffering endlessly, MC raced furiously from one track to the next, in an endless loop, never actually playing any tracks.

I'm having ripping problems as well, but I always have ripping problems when MC fails to play back in Digital. This problem arises under various settings and conditions and while using any and all CDs -- but not while using programs other than MC to rip or play.

The newest build looks incredible, though, and all the new features are terrific. Just wish I could play a CD. Err.

LukeUPDATE:  I went ahead and uninstalled MC9, then reinstalled the latest build (9.0.162). This of course restored my registry entires . . . but didn't fix the problem. Am I the only one having this problem where new builds of MC can never handle a simple CD player without enormous amounts of effort? The problem of Digital playback losing all functionality? I can't find any other posts with specifically my problem . . . and yet I keep getting the problem on both my home and work computers.

       You are not alone I have the same problems with CD's, this did not occur when I was using MJ8. Someone must have a solution.

Thanks for responding. It's good to know I might not be completely crazy. And "ashmason" started a similar topic (he can only rip using analog) but also hasn't been able to find a fix for the problem.

I have almost the exact same problem, and am amazed that none of the (usually) immensely helpful JRiver People and Friends have responded to this somewhat glaring problem many of us have been having.

My case actually differs slightly. I can't even find the mentioned registry key; and instead of showing any pretenses of buffering when I attempt to play a CD, Media Center (v9.0.164) just says "Stopped" with no motion of said CD or any other apparent action or responce. In addition, this problem began occuring when I upgraded to Build 164 from an earlier build of MC, so I was at one point perfectly able to get CD playback/ripping working in Media Center 9, as opposed to Luke's earlier troubles.

Not meaning to be in any way rude, I hope the proper people have taken note. The lack of basic CD ripping capabilities severly limits functionality of this great software.

When nobody answers, it usually means that nobody knows.  If we knew, we'd answer.

We're down to the point now where the problems are fairly unusual, so it's hard to distinguish between MC problems and problems that come from other sources.

MC uses it's own internal ASPI...so this may not work...

Update your ASPI to latest version (4.7.1.2) from the Adaptec site. There could be some weird interactions going on. Both systems listed are running old versions, and if MC bothers to list it, then it could be relevent.

PS: Josh...if you can dump Mellen Ed for W2k or XP, you'd be in a lot better shape (though you may want a little more memory)

The ASPI idea sounded awfully good . . . but it hasn't solved my problem, I'm afraid. I've also been playing around more with various playback settings (direct sound, wavemapper, et. al) with no luck. If MC9 could only play and rip CDs, it would be the greatest thing since . . . well . . . MJ8    Actually, it was the now archaic MJ7 that gave me the least problems with playing/ripping . . . but MC9 is amazing . . . oooh, head hurts now, me stop talking.

NOTE: since a registry edit fixed this for me the last time . . . doesn't it seem likely that this is another registry problem? Possibly?

Please try turning the logging feature on by changing the value of this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JRiver\Media Jukebox\CD Reader\Logger

from zero to one (1).

Then exit and restart MC. Try ripping (or playing) a track. Then exit MC and send me the log file called "cdripper.log" in the MC install directory.

UPDATE:

This is the log of me inserting a CD and trying to play it, then trying to rip three tracks from it. Yadb correctly labeled all of the tracks, but then could not play any of them . . . instead skipping from one to the next to the next . . . .

However, despite not being able to PLAY the tracks, MC was able to rip the tracks. The ripping process goes pretty smoothly -- but then the resulting MP3 files are extremely distorted, with lots of echoes and pops.

I'll e-mail JohnT the full log as well . . .  thanks!

I've discovered that when I convert wave files to MP3, the resulting MP3 files are pure static. Converting wave to anything else does not give this result. Converting other file types to MP3 also does not give this problem.

These wave files are created by MC9, so it's not like I'm pulling them in from another, non-compatible source.

I know this problem was being discussed in some other threads, but I'm wondering if the two problems could be related . . . or if MC9 is just terribly uncompatible with my Dell.

Since I installed Media Center 9.0.168 I find that I can now rip and play CD's even in digital playback.
I have not noticed any announcement regarding this.
All I can say to whoever was responsible is thank you very much. For me Media Center is now complete

Geoff, it's good to hear things are working for you now. Is everything still working with the final release (169)?

I skipped over MC9.0.168 and went right to 169, and I'm afraid the problem hasn't yet been resolved in my case . . . but JohnT is working on it for me (   )

What about everybody else?
