NEW: NVIDIA Shield (Android TV) Support
« on: November 15, 2019, 06:10:06 pm »

Last week, we got JRiver for Android going on Android TV.  This week, Brad and Matt got video working.

The next build of JRiver for Android should allow video playback on the Shield.

Great progress!

Is that pretty much fully functional video, or are there limitations on resolution, file type, dynamic range etc.?

MC on Android currently uses ExoPlayer to play video, which supports only a subset of the formats that eg. MC on the desktop supports.
On the container side it should handle MP4, MKV and MPEG-TS (.ts and .m2ts), but Codecs depend on the device itself, but typically for Video that's at least H264, H265 and MPEG-4 (and sometimes MPEG-2). The biggest problem is on the Audio side, since many devices do not support typical consumer audio codecs like AC-3 or DTS.

Older formats like AVI are also not supported yet.

Awesome news.

Does anyone expect the Android TV version to do everything? To me getting the most popular stuff up and running seems way more important than waiting to get every format.

Thanks team.

Congrats, TEAM- JRiver.
I just ordered my Nvidia 2019 pro from Amazon.
I also have 2017 version.
Ready for testing.
Mr.J H-thanks for your empathy, and kind words.
Do you know, I use JRiver MC as a tool or way to keep me going. I use it to challenge and motivate myself.
With it it keeps me thinking and optimistic about the future.
George.

That's the majority of the stuff I am interested in. I still have some legacy divX in avi stuff, but that's not as important.

From what I have read the 2017 and 2019 versions are identical in every way aside from the new remote.
Perhaps it's something you could confirm when you have both to compare?

Off the top of my head v2019 has Dolby Vision, AI upscaling. The processor is supposed to be better. The new upscaling on some stuff is much better. Still no madVR but much better than the old one.

2 questions:

1. When will it work as a client?  Without that it is not useful to me.
2. Will EDL files work (when run as a client)?

Also, is there any screen shots of the UI using video?

I could work around the client thing if I could at least mount/scan via SMB or NFS.  Using a USB stick/drive is fine for testing but not a realistic solution for those of us with massive libraries.

Curious if it will play multi-channel FLAC with sampling rates > 48kHz.  This has typically not worked on the Shield but don't know if that's a limitation of the Shield itself or the players being used.

This is great by the way - I would be fine if this played back content downsampled if needed as I use these STBs on TVs and in rooms that are not conducive to a proper home theater, often using a good soundbar+sub.  I leave that duty to custom built HTPC in a proper home theater room.  It's all about options :)

Time for some testing!

The JRiver for Android build (119) that has working video is on the Play Store now.

I had to uninstall 118 to get 119 to work.  I also deleted my app data for it, then imported again.

This should be better in a build or two.

We hope to get it working as a client in the next two weeks.

The UI is extremely important to the wife, and there are no pictures on the play store that look like it's from the shield.

I would really like to get an idea of the UI before spending money on this. It needs to be similar to theater view.

I'll take pics if I can but it is similar to the home screen of the Shield. Very easy to navigate during my very limited use. Once client or NAS storage is working I'll have a better idea.

Any plans to get around Androids upsampling of CD ripped flac from 44.1 to 48?

Would be nice if the app had a 5 day trial or some way to give it a shot before buying. I guess you can just do a refund if you want.

Any update on the version that is a client for remote libraries? This is a killer feature :)

There are still some bugs to work out for this feature, so I don't have an exact date. It should be soon (possibly later today), but it will probably only be available on mobile devices initially. The Android TV version will be next and shouldn't take long once the mobile version is ready.

JRiver for Android now can load a remote library from JRiver Media Center.

Video and Images are working.  Cover art is temporarily disabled in some places for speed reasons.

As of last night, you still couldn't play video from a connected library if authentication was enabled.  Setting it to read only is not an option for me (because of some automation), so videos won't play.

Can we get some screen shots of the Shield JRiver client showing how Video is browsed?  I'd like to get an idea of how I would use the JRiver Android interface as my 10 foot view.

This might fundamentally change how I play my video collection, which I'm doing with a different product right now.  BUT... I have my collection mirrored in JRiver on my Mac, so it's all set and ready to go.  ...all I need is a usable client on my Shield that can connect to JRiver on my Mac.  If this is that product, I want it.

Thanks,

Brian.

We can probably post some soon; however, this aspect is currently being worked on. The Android TV version is still very early in development.
