Amazon Fire TV
« on: December 31, 2019, 04:34:32 pm »

Also, this is not related to the Shield, but are there any plans to get this working for Amazon Android TV's?  I have a bunch of these I can test with and a need for.  Amazon sticks, Cubes, and Tablets.  I tried accessing the Google Playstore with my cube, but it was a no-go.  I'm sure you're aware, Amazon has their own Playstore.  I also tried accessing it directly, but again a no-go.  The hardware is quite capable and is Android based.

Thanks, Chris

Once it's working well on the Shield, it should work on other Android TV's.  We have another one it works on now.

Amazon using a different store is a problem though.  I'm not sure we'll pursue it.

I didn't know that Amazon made an Android TV device.

The Amazon Fire TV Stick, Amazon Fire TV Stick 4k, Amazon Fire TV Cube as well as embedded Fire TV 4k in Toshiba TV's and tablets.  Not sure you want to ignore this huge market.  It probably dwarfs all the other Android TV devices.  I'm frankly surprised this wasn't the first thing JRiver targeted.

Having both Fire TV's and Shield's and having played with others (Minix for example), without a doubt, the Shield is the cream of the crop, but you should give a serious look at the Amazon products.  Yes they have their own store, but they have a ton of apps already.  It can't be that difficult to certify with Amazon?

I looked again at Amazon and they don't say "Android TV".  I'll take your word for it though.  Thanks.

Edit:
They aren't Android TV.  See the link in Awesome Donkey's post below.

I was under the assumption that the Fire OS Amazon devices (e.g. the Fire Stick) functions like Android TV, but it's not actually based on the Android TV OS itself instead based on "normal" Android.

EDIT: https://developer.amazon.com/docs/fire-tv/differences-from-android-tv-development.html

Looks like Fire OS is similar to Android TV OS, but it's not actually based on the Android TV OS?

Its close enough to be able to provide a decent UI for both. That you cannot use the Play Store is a bit more annoying, but on the other hand FireTV devices are rather common in many homes, so we'll have to see in the long run where it goes.

I've read lots of feedback for devices that operate on Android TV and the Fire TV is usually in that discussion.  Didn't realize it was Android vs Android TV.

Glad we are talking about FireTV.  I guess I'm not surprised it's not an official Android TV device since Amazon and Google are at war.  But that being said, it functions very similar to Android TV and the hardware is decent (and cheap).  I have both Fire TV's and Shields in my house.  There is no doubt the Shield is the Cadillac, but at 2x to 3x the price.

I do think it's worth a looksie!

We are a FireStick family over here and would love to get my music via a JRMC FireTv app instead of what I am using currently FWIW.

I have JRemote2 installed on my Amazon Fire 10 HD along with other Android Apps.

The method I used for loading Play Store is described for all Amazon Fire tablets here. https://www.androidpolice.com/2019/12/26/install-play-store-amazon-fire-tablet/

Thanks for posting the link.  I added it to the wiki in an Amazon Fire topic.

I know that this is an old post, but are you aware that the last posts moved from the Amazon Fire Tv to the Amazon Fire HD Tablet.

Would love to know if anyone has installed JRemote on the Fire TV  and if the remote works.

There's no official support for the Amazon devices.

Panel should work in a browser.
