Sorting USB sticks alphabetically for car systems
« on: January 20, 2020, 09:40:36 am »

Car systems playing from USB stick typically display folders in order of date modified instead of alphabetically.

Display order becomes more "scrambled" with each new Sync in JRiver, unless the stick is emptied before each Sync.

This is no fault of JRiver MC; it's a widely known limitation of car systems.

A handful of small, freeware apps have been developed to "correct" this. Examples:

https://fat-sorter.software.informer.com/

https://www.luisrios.eti.br/public/en_us/projects/yafs/

It would be fantastic if JRiver could just build this right into MC.

An option within the existing Handheld Sync functionality, made available for mass storage devices (e.g., USB sticks).

Both apps noted above disclose thier logic on thier web pages.

Thank you!

Yea I've been using a FAT sorter myself.

I use a FM transmitter and if you just drag files to the usb stick it will always come out scrambled.
FAT sorter fixes that.

Right. Do you agree it seems like a natural feature/option to include in a premium library/handheld  application like MC? I expect it would be a pretty basic bit of code, too.

Actually: The creator(s) of FAT Sorter even include the source code with the compiled application. Hint, hint. ;)

Update: Sorting takes forever on a USB stick. So I just sync to an intermediate folder on my SSD, sort there, and then copy to USB.
