JRiver Video Resolution Via DLNA
« on: January 24, 2020, 08:44:42 pm »

Can anyone within this forum who knows confirm the video resolution capability of JRiver when using a DLNA home network  which uses ethernet. I seem to recall seeing somewhere that the system is capped at 720p but I can't find that setting now. I have many movies that are 1080p bluray and no doubt one day will start accumulating 4k video so this is an important question for me.  Will much appreciate feedback on this. Many thanks, michael power.

It's not capped at all, however if you need to convert video for playback on a DLNA Renderer, then there are only so many formats to choose from. See image.

You will note the formats include 1080p, but there is no 4K yet. However, if your DLNA Renderer supports 4K playback, I would assume that you could send that video to it in Original format rather than convert it, and it would play on the Renderer.

Basically, the capabilities of your DLNA Renderer are usually the constraint.

There are some issues when playing full folder Blu-ray rips of course, as DLNA is a file based protocol, and won't play such a rip, or an original Blu-ray disc. In those case you would need to convert a 4K Blu-ray to 1080p for playback currently, or rip the Blu-ray to, for example, a 4K MKV file.
