I need a moderate priced DAC so that I can get >48kHz sampling out of my Toshiba laptop. In another thread we have exhausted all possibilities, and a DAC is the only solution apparently.

There is no point going for a very high end DAC at the moment because for the foreseeable future I am limited to a Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 2 speaker. The "proper" system is in another room at the other end of the house and I don't have much access to it (and MC isn't connected to it).

I'm thinking Cambridge Audio DACMAGIC XS V 2.0 which I can get for AUD159 (~USD90).

Or does the Brains Trust think something else might be better perhaps? There seem to be a few available in a similar price range - am I just being seduced by the Cambridge name?

For the hell of it I should probably mention that this is primarily for use out of the Laptop with JRiver, but I also use a Shanling M3s DAP with the Onyx speaker when I'm in the shed, and with Koss BT540i Headphones (which can be 3.5mm corded) when I'm walking. The Shanling has a USB-C port, 3.5mm port and a 2.5mm Balanced port. In other words, can I kill a couple of birds with the same stone, by being able to boost the output from the Shanling as well?

YouTube is full of good advice. i.e. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_asDKYASy0  I'm sure you have looked there though.


URL links with name are easy.

Click the insert URL button above, , which will insert the code: [url][/url] into your post where the cursor is sitting.

Then add in an = sign plus the URL in the correct place, like this: [url=https://penonaudio.com/shanling-m3s.html][/url]
Note that I used the direct URL to the page you used, without all the context junk.

Then add in the description you want to use for the link between the ][ brackets, like this: [url=https://penonaudio.com/shanling-m3s.html]Shanling M3s DAP[/url]

Done.

Of course, if you have already written the descriptive text, such as "Shanling M3s DAP", then you can highlight that, click the button, and then add the =https://penonaudio.com/shanling-m3s.html URL as above, for example.

Thanks Roderick. No I hadn't thought of Youtube for DAC advice - don't think I ever would have either.
