Cannot log in as a user on a client
« on: February 09, 2020, 06:06:54 am »

I just installed a client MC26 on a PC, I want this MC26 to access the Main library only as a restricted user. Yet, it won't let me! If I use the access key of the Server + the credentials of the restricted user, I do not connect to the library. It appears I have to log in as an administrator with full access, then I can switch to restricted user.

Problem is, all I have to do to have administrator access again without entering the password is to close / restart MC26. It logs in automatically as admin. Kind of defeeats the whole point of users with restricted access...

I've been asking for a way to start MC as a different USER all the way back to MC24 feature requests... Absolutely no response yet. Same request with mobile devices ie Panel/Android....

What's the point of having users with restricted access if 1) it never logs by default as this user(but rather as the admin with total access) and 2) if it can be circumvented so easily once it is, by restarting the software, seriously... ?

Close, Clients actually startup logged in with the same user that the Server is currently logged in as, which is not ideal. Clients and Panel/etc really need to have a way to startup logged in as a different user than the Server. Even logged in as the "last user that was used" would work.

Not ideal indeed.
If you want a given client to log in as user "B" (with restrictions), then you need to log in as user "B" in the server... ? So it negates the possibility of logging in as admin on one client and logging in as user "B" on another, everyone has to suffer the same restrictions (or lack thereof)?

Better yet: when you add a distant library on a client, just add the user & password you want this client logged in as. Then this client should not be able to log in as admin (unless you add it).

What's certain is this: I don't see the use for the current user system.

Here is what the wiki says:

Media Network Users

If you are using Media Network features, any connected clients (whether connected copies of MC, JRemote, Gizmo, or whatever) will "open as" whichever User is currently active on the server when first launched. In other words, whichever User happened to have been "last used", on the server, becomes is the "network client user setting". So, if you want to keep a default of a particular one of your users (the Everyday one, for example) then you'll want to make sure to leave the server set on the Everyday user when you're done using it.

In connected copies of Media Center, however (the HTPC in the Living Room, for example) you are able to switch the active user to any of the other options (using the above explained methods). But when you close and re-open the client copy, it will revert back to whatever is currently active on the server. Access to this ability to switch users depends on support in the client (it is not currently supported in JRemote), and if not supported, you will be restricted to the user set on the Server.

So what will often work best is if you have exactly this: An Everyday user (with no password) that you use regularly, and leave the Server set on (if using those features). And then you add a password to the Administrator account, and any other users you want restricted for some reason.

So you can leave the server logged in as a "lowest common denominator user".  Each time a client connects, it will connect as that user, but then you can switch to a different user as needed.

But how does one switch user on JRemote, Gizmo, Panel, and Android? I've only tried Panel, and it doesn't seem possible...
