empty theater view display in jriver 26.x.x.30
« on: March 21, 2020, 05:25:02 am »

I faced with with problem of empty black display while opening theater view in jriver 26 (30).
I did not have the same problem with JRiver 17,20,21,24.
I was checking all possible options to correct this issue but still have it empty.

I will highly appreciate your help guys to fix this issue.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think that's an issue with MC.  It could be your video driver or hardware.  Theater View uses 3D drawing.

What is the OS?  Is it up to date?

windows 7 Ultimate.
This option is working 100% in jriver 24.0.55. What is a difference? I do not think it is a driver issue or OS issue.

Likely It's probably because newer MC versions, including MC26, use OpenGL instead of Direct3D (which I believe MC24 uses) for theater view. That said, I believe MC26 uses ANGLE which *should* allow it to work with Direct3D, but I'm not sure though if it'd work on Windows 7.

Updating video drivers is a good start. I believe there's a Windows Update needed for Windows 7 for it to work correct there if I recall correctly, you might try a search of the forums, I know it's been discussed several times before.

And I really hate to say it, but IMO, it's probably not a good idea to stick with Windows 7 since it's a dead OS now. You can't expect software like MC as newer versions are released to keep working correctly on older, dead OSes like Windows 7. If you decide to stick with Windows 7, you'll have to accept that some features, if you continue to upgrade MC, won't work correctly anymore because they require feature/components found in newer Windows OSes. Theater view is likely one of those features that will stop working in newer MC versions on Windows 7 as time goes by.

Ok.  But, JRiver states the last version supports  also windows 7 and it was the one of the reason to upgrade my current 24 version. I strongly believe there is a bug in new version to be fixed in next version. The fact is that I do not consider upgrading my current OS for the issue to be solved.  I hope JRiver will take seriously this matter.

Not a bug.  Try updating, as Awesome Donkey suggested.

JimH,

If last version of JRiver 26 is not fully compatible with windows 7 - it explains everything but it must be notified before a customer will decide to pay for the new version.

I don't work for JRiver, so this is my own personal opinion on the subject. If a user decides to keep using a Windows operating system that's not supported by Microsoft anymore, I wouldn't expect third-party software vendors/developers (including JRiver) to go back and try to support those dead Windows OSes anymore. Basically, in my personal opinion, you're on your own when choosing to stick with a dead OS, even though Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users can still right now upgrade to Windows 10 for free. There are some hardware vendors including Nvidia, Intel and AMD (in regards to GPU drivers) that have dropped official Windows 7 support from their drivers. Bottom line is, the way I see it Media Center 26 does work on Windows 7, but because of how old Windows 7 is (and it no longer being supported by Microsoft), it may or may not have what's required to support newer features in Media Center, including the newer versions of theater view powered by OpenGL/ANGLE.

That said, I did mention a search of the forums might yield some information that *might* get it working. For example, this post from Hendrik from nearly a year ago regarding Windows Updates needed to get it working: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,120042.msg833877.html#msg833877

In fact, that entire topic might be illuminating on this subject. But I wouldn't expect newer features (especially video-related features) to keep working in Windows 7 as new, major Media Center versions get released. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Windows 7 support is officially dropped by JRiver within a year, maybe two at the most. Regardless, I hate to be that guy and point out the obvious but for the sake of security alone, I wouldn't recommend any user to keep using Windows 7 right now, especially when those users can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free (or if Windows 10 is less than desirable, I'd recommend jumping to a Linux distro like Ubuntu or Manjaro).

Got your point, Awesome Donkey. Upgrading OS for truly highly resolving  and extremely balanced audio  doesn't look like installing JRiver software in terms of complexity and time spent for at all.  It is a different story  - I 'll move into this direction later.
Only one last thing. I think It would be honest to remove '...and windows 7' compatibility line  from JRiver download page, wouldn't it? It is 'dead horse' now,  isn't, why to point out it again?

I use MC26 on Win7 on one machine.  Theater View works fine.

How's the updating going?

JimH,

Unfortunately, the same problem is after the updating.
I hope for your understanding - I want to drop the subject .
I 'll continue using  jriver 24 at this moment. It is working like charm for me.
As for JRiver 26, I am sure it is wonderful version and it probably works better in term of sound quality than 24 one  but it is not working properly for my current setup now and nobody can help me with that.
To be frank, at the beginning, I thought there was a read-to-use solution or right approach to fix it  but it is clear nobody from JRiver can invent something like quick fix for off-the-shelf WINDOWS 7.

Regards,

You have a very unusual problem.  We haven't seen many recent problems with Windows 7.

Did you update both Windows and the video driver?

If you did update the driver, try going to the video device manufacturer's site and getting their updates.

Val, I'm using MC26 on Win7, and theater view is working ok.  I didn't have to install any special updates when upgrading my MC from an older version to 26.

There might be something screwy in your MC settings causing this.  You could try the following:

1. Backup your MC26 library
2. Move your library backups away to a safe place, so that they are not in the original location.
3. Uninstall MC26, selecting BOTH options to remove registry entries and library files.
4. Reinstall MC26

It will now be installed with default settings.  See if theater view works.  If it does, you can restore your library backup and see if that breaks theater view.  If it does, you know the problem is in your MC settings.

Good luck.

Yes, I was updating my windows and intel 4600 drivers from original site.
Wer, it sounds good you really can work with jriver 26 and windows 7 without any problem.
I appreciate your suggestion of  re-installing software because of some unknown internal  conflict takes place.
By the way, FYI, the same black screen problem were being discussed appr. two years ago for version 19. It means it is not completely new staff.

Just to be sure, here's where you can find Intel 4600 drivers.

Black screen 99% of the time is related to GPU drivers. However it could also be the lack of specific Windows Updates for Windows 7 like detailed in that other forum thread.
