Ipc vs. loopback, what's the difference?

I've been a user since MC23, a few years anyway, and I do have the WDM driver installed. It has its own zone (called, unimaginatively, "WDM") so that it can be separately adjusted when playing PC noises. One thing that I've always wondered about, and can't seem to find an explanation for, is why does this sometimes show as Ipc, other times as loopback in the now playing? File -> "Open Live" seems to open "Loopback." What if any difference is there, please?
