Feature Request: Skip Single-Result Levels in Standard View
« on: April 21, 2020, 02:14:13 am »

Could JRiver consider adding the ability, at least as an option, for Standard View to skip single-result levels in the category definitions, in the same way Theater View and JRemote currently do?

Not only would this make things more consistent (Std view is the only one that doesn't skip these levels) but it would enable a bunch of cool things to be done in terms of categorizing and grouping music, videos, and images.  If it's optional, no one would be disrupted.

The whole idea is detailed here:

Plus you'll get to see some funny pictures. :)

I agree this would be nice to have.  A number of customers over the years have come here to ask how to do this.  They are usually told "that's not possible in standard view".  It would be pretty neat if it was an option for categories views.

Standard View does work quite differently then Theater View or any of the remotes. It would become very inconsistent to cut out levels in the middle, since many of those elements in Standard View can be used for tagging, for example in the Tree when using a Categories view. Having different depths in the tree mean different things would be very confusing at best, since you can also drop files on the tree to tag them.

What it could do is possibly just leave the tree be and just auto-open the single element, but otherwise leave the navigation structure entirely as it is now,  just saving you one click?
As an alternative you could also enable "Always show files" and you get the file list on any depth of the Standard View navigation.

Hendrik, if I understand you correctly, what you're describing is exactly what I meant to ask for.  Whether the extra level still exists in the tree is immaterial to our request.  The key thing is that the view "automatically drill down" in the right-hand pane where the categories are displayed, in other words "auto-open the single element" as you said.  (It should actually go into it like a double-click, not just select it like a single click)

Saving one double-click may sound unimportant, but if you've actually experimented with this as Brian and I have, that extra click makes certain types of complex groupings very clumsy, and so you avoid implementing them even if they're beneficial.  Theater View and the remote views both exhibited the auto-drill-down behavior, and so make these types of complex views seamless.

So yes, auto-select/auto-drill-down on the right while leaving the tree be would be great.

Just wanted to follow up on this, as it would make some complicated things easier and more consistent...

Could we get this enhancement Hendrik, as you describe above?
