Podcast Download Fails
« on: April 21, 2020, 10:47:20 am »

Hi all
I am trying to help a friend solve this problem remotely and can't find a solution.
They cannot download podcasts through the latest version of MC26, or 25. Their OS is the latest windows 10. The download fails immediately. I tamed windows defender and turned it off. I tried using a VPN. I tried changing download directories. I tried one of my library backups since my podcasts download fine. This feature didn't just break, it's the first time they have tried podcasts.

I am at a loss of what else to try. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Try setting the Podcast download directory in Options > Podcast to something really safe, like C:\Podcasts.

Still fails.
It may be worth noting that I can stream the podcasts fine. No problems there.

You could look in the Log (after enabling it) to see if it offers any clues.

I found clues.
Code: [Select]
0037750: 8588: General: JRFileSystem::MakeDirectoryTree: Failed! Path=C:\Users\natha\Music\Podcast\Cover Art\The user shown there is from a different PC that the library backup was copied from. Current user is alexi not natha.

I cleared the library, added some podcasts, and tried to download. It worked.
I then restored the desired library backup again and they are broken again.
It seems like podcasts are having issues with library backups. I know I have done some of my own library transfers lately without issue but those PCs had the same user names.

Good detective work.

Search options for C:\Users\natha\.  Or dig through all the file location settings.

It must be somewhere.

Right you are. I have everything working now. It's quite simple and obvious now that it is solved.

Turns out Podcasts has its own section in settings with directory options.
I was changing the directory in Settings-->File Location-->Audio (CD Rips and Podcasts).
I guess I use the search in option too much.

Podcasts are setup a bit weird. The default naming rules are changed under 'File Location', but the directory is changed under the podcast settings. Ideally all podcast settings would be under the same place.

One other thing about podcasts I'll toss in since they are on my mind is .opml files. MC can import lists of podcasts from them, but I don't see a way to export to a .opml. Adding this feature would make it much easier to share podcasts between apps and PCs.

Thanks for your help in solving this.
