How about: Show "Desktop" Next to "My Computer"?
« on: April 22, 2003, 12:14:07 pm »

On the left side, inorder to exploer your computer to search for a media, you have to click on My computer and start your way there.

Can you put "Desktop" right on top of "My Computer"? It's kind a stanard thing Windows does these days. It's a nightmare for windows XP users because they have to go:

My Computer > C: > Documents and Setting > (User Account Name) > Desktop.

Desktop is where most people places their media for quick access and organizing items.

Have any statistics on that? :P

But I agree. I'd like to MC be more XP-like in this regard. It's more Desktop centric than My Computer centric. For instance if you open up My Computer in Windows Explorer and click Up, you wind up with the Desktop, and on that Desktop you have My Documents and My Network Places, along with My Computer, regardless of whether you actually have these icons displayed on your desktop or not.

It would be nothing to add, for sure. Keep in mind that you already have a "Show Desktop" icon in the QuickLaunch tray next to the Start button of the taskbar. Too much redundancy is not a good thing.

What does quick launch has to do with MC9? But i think Doof's made a good idea.

Desktop instead of My Computer would be a good solution. I mean, Desktop already has My Computer, which makes Desktop higher level then My Computer it self.

Just a though.

Personally, I don't like the quicklaunch tray. I turned it off in win 98 and have never turned it on in XP.  I also like to keep my desktop completely clear. For quick access to folders and programs, I've used Hidden Menu for years. (if you use it, stick the hidden menu.ini in your backup routine).
That said though, as a user who has only recently begun using MC's internal file browsing, kicking off from the desktop would be better imo, if only for familiarities sake :)

> What does quick launch has to do with MC9

Because "Show Desktop" is contained within Quick Launch (right there on the screen...if you don't have it disabled, that is) and is as easy to get to as it would be in MC.

edit: When you talk about the Desktop folder, you are seeing the graphical representation of it when you minimize all your other apps, so "Show Desktop" applies here.

Yes, i know what desktop is. But why are u associating Quick lunch "Desktop" feature in windows with MC9?

I was talking about exploring your computer's media with MC9. I Was saying how would be great to start with Desktop instead of My Computer as the first level. I don't see how you are comparing this with Quick Lunch. What does that got to do with it? If i want to see my Desktop anytime i want, i just hit Windows Key and D. But that wasn't what i were asking here.

Anyways, moving on...

What do some of you think about this idea? I have most of my pictures on the desktop (with in a folder of course). I'm sure if the team wanted to cahnge this, it could take less then 5 min to do so :).

For what it's worth, I agree.

Say I had just copied some stuff off my portable hard drive into a folder on my desktop (and I agree with the above sentiment that XP is more desktop-centric than previous versions of Windows).  I want to tag it with MC9.  So, I either have to move it from my desktop or use MC9 to surf to C:\Documents and Settings\Kurt\Desktop\<folder>.

The former doesn't meet my needs of keeping the goodies on my desktop and the latter is a wee bit tedious.

If y'all could take the Explorer bit in MC9 one level higher to the Desktop level, it'd be neat.

I dunno how it'd look, though, since the "root" of the explorer node in MC9 is called "My Computer".  Calling it "Desktop" would be a bit counterintuitive, but calling it "My Computer" and expanding it to see "Desktop," within which is another "My Computer"... well... y'all get the idea.

Yes, i agree that "My Computer" is a good name to represent 'file exploeration'. Having Desktop right under My Computer would be a unusal step up, but if it gets the job done, hey it's still good.

I'm coming from Win2K. The uppermost level (folder) you can hit is "My Computer". I haven't played with XP, so there must be some interface differences. The Desktop folder in W2k is identical (in contents) to the Desktop you see when everything is minimized (except for items that are available to "all users"). That must be why I'm unable to see what your after.

You could add Desktop to MCs Favorites and then add the Favorites button to MCs toolbar. Then accessing your Desktop (or any other folder/playlist/view scheme) from within MC is just a click away.

Thanks for the tip. I guess i'll have to settle for that. But to speak in general (regular users) i don't think it's such a bad idea.

Surely there must be a way to traverse the Windows shell in exactly the same way as Windows Explorer does it. Basically what we want is the equivalent of the top-level Explorer tree, but including the files in each folder as another level (filtered to show media files only).

Matt, have you looked into this at all? I think you'd want to start with the SHGetDesktopFolder function. The link http://www.bridgespublishing.com/articles/issues/0001/Enumerating_the_shell_namespace.htm might be helpful. Definitely not needed until 9.1 at least though.

Yeah, XP & 2K are different in this regard. XP only shows the Recycle Bin on the desktop by default. No My Computer, Network Places or any of that other stuff.

But if you open up a folder in Explorer and keep on clicking Up, you wind up at Desktop. And even though you don't see My Computer, My Documents or any of that other stuff, it's shown in Explorer.

The same goes with the Open File dialog box. Desktop is top level, followed by My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places, and Recycle Bin.

All of MC's file dialog boxes (Open Media File, Import Media, etc) all have Desktop as the top level (since it's using the common file dialog boxes I presume), so it's sometimes a little jarring to suddenly have to navigate to My Computer\C:\Documents and Settings\Doof\Desktop or even worse, My Computer\C:\Docuements and Settings\Doof\My Documents\My Music, where as in the file dialog boxes it's just Desktop\My Documents\My Music.

Even if you don't have My Computer, My Doc, etc on your desktop, you can still see them in File exporing window. Which means, MC9 could just as easily have them regardless of if user has them enabled on their desktop or not.

I don't know, i just think it's a good interface change and user experience.

Well, after 2 updates, the feature is still not in. I guess it's not pratical in some more technical prespective. :(
