I modified my Smartlist to include three albums to exclude.  I stopped playback.  I then selected Clear Playing Now from the Playing Now context menu to have MC26 close in a crash.

I restarted with the Smartlist the way it was prior to adding the three additional albums.  I cleared playing now without issue.  I will try adding the three exclusions now while it remains stopped.
