initial PGS subtitle scaling
« on: July 08, 2020, 01:23:41 am »

Background
PGS on HD and UHD bluray are 1080p resolution.

Playing this on 4K TV requires subtitles to be scaled up.

Glitch
When video starts playing (at start of play or when video is skipped forward/backward or jumped to arbitrary time) ... if it happens that there is subtitle to display there - the vertical scaling of subtitle will be incorrect ... it will be too small - so it would appear that the subtitles shift up

The scaling will eventually be corrected to right value after some time. I never noticed this cause I usually start playing video from start (so I guess there is sufficient time for vertical scale to be corrected before any subtitles show up)

This happens on both RO Standard and HQ

Severity
Its not a big deal as the problem corrects itself quickly. And most people will not noticed it. But once you know what to look for - its hard to miss it. A sore sight - luckily a short one.

Now I recall some old discussion about shifting subtitles to avoid MC OSD ... that would make sense regarding this behavior

Just checked and thank god this does not apply to SSA/ASS subtitles

While this work for pure text subs like SRT well ... IMHO it should not be done with any subtitles that can specify precise position of subtitles on the screen - as this can be used to arrange things on screen precisely - and PGS can certainly do that

At least - could we have an option in menu to turn off this feature?

EDIT: that was the discussion https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=121987.0
... but there is no mention there that SUP and VOB subtitles get compressed vertically to make room for OSD ... again - could this be optional?
