Parameter is out of range
« on: July 10, 2020, 10:04:51 am »

Hi

I can no longer rip a CD. I always get the message "Parameter is out of range". It doesn't matter what CD drive I try.
I use the Media Center 26.0.98, Windows 10 Pro
Regards
Andreas

Thank you for your help

Try a Google search for Windows 10 problems and ripping.  I think it's a Windows update that broke it.

From your log, you're getting an "Access Denied" error when accessing the disk. MC can read the track list, but then fails when it tries to read the subchannel data.
This probably means you have some other application locking the disk - try disabling the antivirus and close or uninstall other apps that might be accessing the drive. You can also try running MC as Administrator.

I hope what follows is understood as constructive critique:

For further debugging, MC team could clarify what is the exact operation that is failing (cmd=0x42), even though they are usually unwilling to pursue these cases and a bit too quick (in my opinion) to just dismiss them as user error or antivirus woes, or just assign the blame to some other app. While that's true in some cases, it should not be the universal go-to response.

It's true that many issues are caused by windows/antivirus/others, but it can also be said in that case that MC doesn't play nice with others. Perhaps some effort could be made to improve MC's compatibility/niceness, but I don't see any willingness to do that. If MC doesn't play nice when X is installed, the solution is always to uninstall X, no effort is made into finding a way to coexist, or at least to determine if the root cause is something that MC might be doing wrong. There's only 1 download of your log file (at the time of writing), and that was me. Granted, not much time has passed yet, but Jim has already responded so it's likely no one else from JRiver will.

For instance, is MC requesting exclusive access to the drive? It's not really required for ripping and would result in this Access Denied error when other apps are also accessing the drive. Finding and fixing these issues (when possible) has value, in that it improves the product and the user's satisfaction level. Bad support in turn leads to bad publicity and fewer sales. It's obviously not possible to investigate each and every issue, but the pattern on these forums is to just dismiss any and all issues where the cause seems to be external to MC, even though there's a chance that MC could be improved to handle the underlying issue.

For instance, is MC requesting exclusive access to the drive?

While I agree with your rant, I acknowledge the resource restriction JRiver works under. More resources would mean a higher price for the software, and in this age of streaming, that isn't likely to happen.

But there have been more than a few problems with CD drives over time, from both drivers and Windows updates. It would be good if there was a solution to all those issues, possibly with a change in the way MC is coded.

Anyway, I think the Exclusive Access to the drive is required for a Secure Rip.

AndreasBurgherr could try selecting "Options > CD, DVD & BD > General > CD Ripping > Drive {X} > Copy mode > Normal" and see if MC will now rip a CD.

I could be wrong on this. If that does fix the issue, I have no idea why ripping worked previously, and doesn't now, unless that setting was changed.

PS: The "Parameter is out of range" error does pop up every now and then with different users. Rebooting the PC should always be the first step when it does. The next should be updating the driver for the optical drive, and possibly even updating the drive firmware. Doing those may allow MC to perform a Secure Rip again.

Pristine (Brand New) discs shouldn't need to be ripped in "Secure Mode".

Whilst a lot of the problems with MC and CD's/Optical Drives are probably down to the "Cranky Twins" (Windows & Windows Defender) I've noticed that they are happening more often since Displaying Lyrics, which puts a higher load on the CPU/GPU, was introduced.

Weird problems often have weird causes.  I often suggest antivirus when I see these problems, because it's the wildcard that has to be eliminated before we chase a problem.

Read this thread to get a better idea of how often antivirus does cause problems:

Windows Defender has recently become more of a problem unless it's configured correctly.
