jmone made an app that might help.  Search for Chapterfy.

Chapterfy is a great tool to automatically add chapters to a movie.

Unofortunately, it does not ease the process of creating a database with reference video scences and categorize them in playlists. This can be done with particles, but we need a more functional UI to work with.

Therefore, the need for the following feature remains.

Particles is a great feature that is trully unsuable because it takes to much time to create each particle. Right now it takes too much time for each particle to be created, and writing down the beginning and end time of each one and adding them later it is a bit cumbersome.

The following feature will tackle this problem.

I suggest an "advanced toolbar for Particles" on the Display (and for songs under the control button area I guess) with the following buttons  "Start", "End", "(re)name, "Add", "Keywords"(customizable field or optional Library fields), and maybe -+ for speed; so that we can do it while playing the file. By pressing "Add" the particle can be added to library, or/and to a "new particles" playlist).
Additionally:
 - The stacks list does not appear if I right click a file in the playing now playlist
 - Ability to export them together with their playlist to portable devices/
 - Ability to back them up, or/and even add this information to the original file.

Maybe a new web browser engine or an update from Chromium so that you can log back on to Youtube for your favorites.

Not possible, Google blocks embedded Chromium-based browsers from logging into YouTube now unfortunately.

OSD Reposition would be very useful in some cases (sometimes the OSD in Videos is out of picture and my beamer does not show it, because of masking).

So it would be very useful, if there would be a possibility to show the OSD in the picture or just to have an ability to move/ reposition the OSD.

Thanks

Thanks.  Could you post this as a new thread and describe what's missing now?  I've been thinking of something similar.

More details might help.

As an example, I use a variety of video & audio editing tools. Some of them have unique filetypes. For example, Pinnacle Systems has a filetype of *.axp which is not supported by MediaCenter. During the edit session, I will create a number of video snippets that could be incorporated into a chapter, and multiple chapters that can make up a DVD or ISO. There could be different flavors of each for language, DVD type, etc. It would be very useful to create a playlist that contained all of the assets (Music, video, images, and Pinnacle Project files) that make up a snippet in a playlist or playlists within a group that could make up a DVD/ISO, etc.

Would love to be able to create a smartlist (group by artists then randomize by artist) like the one described here, that was never quite able to be made:

https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=98934.0

The missing piece in MC is that there is no way to add additional filters (ex: ratings) after the expansion and sorting of the artists.

I finally figured out how to make this work, though it is not an ideal solution. I created a new custom library expression field and called it "Artist Favorites":

If(And(isequal(isrange([Rating], 3-5), 1, 1),isequal([Live], ), 1), [Artist],0)

This incorporates two additional layers of filtering for me after limiting the files to one per artist in the smartlist (rating greater than 2 and another customer field identifying if the file is a live version).

The smartlist uses the new "Artist Favorites" field to expand the list rather than just simply using the [artist] field. This is how the smartlist code turned out:

[Media Type]=[Audio] [Rating]=>2 -[Live]=[Yes] ~limit=-1,1,[artist] ~expand="artist favorites" ~seq ~sort=Random ~limit=-1,4,[artist] ~sort=[Sequence]

If JRiver could find a way to add additional filters in the smartlist wizard after limiting, this would be even easier!

MC 27 is rolling out to us users and I thank the JRiver Crew for that.

But is it ever going to be possible in theater grid view to select an individual artist, producer, director, genre, etc (that has many individual entries) and from there drill down in the database and see more movies from the selected artist, genre and so on?

I get the reasoning that MC is database first and it is up to the knowledgeable members of the forum to better the GUI in Theater view but not being able to drill down into the MC database from our main Theater grid view is severely limiting the fun we could have.
I find myself together with family often times wanting to know more regarding an certain actor, after we have watched a movie from our sofa, and having to, in Theater view, go up in hierarchy and switch over to Actors alphabetical grid view and then select the first letter of the actor and then scroll down to the actor before we could see more movies that that certain actor have been in is way to many steps and dampening the excitement of freely exploring the MC Database.

I have kept my hopes up for quite many years now, hoping that the next version will focus on Theater View database excitement.

Again thank you for a superb product and I will continue to support MC as it has way more pros than cons!

I'd like to make a request: Touch controls when playing a video.

I use a Surface and while it's great for everything, even navigating Media Center in theater mode, when an actual video is playing, it falls apart. You have to tap the top of the screen and then use the teeny controls, that while great with a mouse, aren't with a finger, especially when trying to jump through a video file.

It would be great to be able to tap the screen and have it pause. Or drag left and right to scrub through the timeline a bit. or swipe up and down to control volume. Kind of like many other players do.

Even if the simplest thing would be to give an option to 'enable touch' and then when you tap on the screen you get larger buttons to easily pause, play, jump around on the timeline, when you're in full screen mode for theatre (or however is easier to implement).

OSD facelift
OSD could use some facelift and I remember that Hendrik mentioned that he was working on with something on that department. One idea which I have written before would be enabling tooltip engine to be used for OSD now playing info screen. Created also a quick OSD mockup image as an example how it could look like compared to current OSD. I'm thinking that central area could be user modified with expression language for different media types

great mockup and great idea

Some ideas/features about group header in standard view:
Ability to change the position text in group header in standard view (left/center/right);
Freeze group header, when using the freeze columns and scroll sideways the group header is not locked;
Play button inside the group header on standard view. (We have the play button inside MC folder);
- Right now if you want to play something in library view you have to select the files then right click and select what you want to do or double click the file.
Insert image file inside the group header;
Ability to add more than one line in the group header;
Move the group header above the fields.

+1. Absolutely agree 100%.  I need a show/hide views capability (context menu item) for views under AUDIO in the tree.  For example, I want to hide most of the default views after I customize and save them under a new name, but show them again when needed.  This will de-clutter my tree.

I have two view names in the Tree under Audio - Default Views and Other Views - under which I collect the original default views and some seldom used views.  They are not hidden, but I put them at the bottom of the Audio Tree and they are very much out of the way.

I would love the ability for MC to natively stream video and audio to a Chromecast, either by appearing as a Zone and/or inclusion of the traditional 'Cast' icon from JRemoteto easily redirect output to the Chromecast.
+1.  Currently I go through BubbleUPnP on Android to select music from JRiver server (or Minim server) and direct to Chromecast audio renderer.  Eventually I will try JRemote2 on Android to do the same.  But sometimes it would be more convenient to cast directly from JRiver on PC.

You can install BubbleUPnP on your Windows PC and then the Chromecast will show up as a DLNA device which you can use for audio output.

@dtc thanks again!  Very very cool.  I have had BubbleUPnP installed on PC all along, but the Chromecast renderers never showed up as JRiver zones.  So I just messed around with settings in BubbleUPnP > Configure... > Media Servers  and JRiver Options > Media Network.  Now all is good: Chromecast Renderers show up as JR Playing Now zones.   ;)

Glad it works.

Here are the original instructions from Bubbleguum himself.

You can now play to a Chromecast Audio (or regular Chromecast) with MC,
using the latest version of BubbleUPnP Server released yesterday to make your Chromecast Audio a DLNA renderer, then use
MC to play to it:

  • Install BubbleUPnP Server 0.9-update13, or update to this version
  • in the web config, go to the Media Renderers tab
  • select your Chromecast Audio in the list and check 'create DLNA renderer'
  • in MC, select the newly created renderer in the 'Playing Now' section of the left pane
  • play something
  • music on Chromecast audio !

Eventually, look at the doc for more info on features and some limitations.

Add a customizable buttons ribbon (like Office suites) so users could populate it with shortcuts to quico access their favourite/most  useful options.
There could be several "preconfigured" ribbons:
- To manage library: copy, replace texts in fields, apply tags, manage/create library fields, move/copy files, backup, import
- To convert/reencode: sync, view already in device, change encoding options..
- To manage playlist, zones...

The product is able to do lot of things, but many are buried beyond 3-4 clicks with their navigation path.

Two things reference this.

1)  Tools>Options>Tree&View>Customize Toolbars
You can add/delete to the toolbar shortcuts from here.

2)  Tools>Options>Tree&View>Advanced>Right Click Recent Command Count
Let's you decide how many recent actions come up with a right click for the sub-categories.

This combination gets you pretty close to what you're looking for.

I'd like to have a new field with the last date/time in which any field in the database which has an equivalent/mirror tag in the file itself was changed, like a change/mod in Name, Album, Lyrics, etc... So if one of those field is updated in the database this field will get a new timestamp. But this field shouldn't be updated when the file is played, added to a playlist, etc..

The already existent "Date Tagged" field doesn't serve to this purpose since it's updated just by playing the track, or by adding to a "playing now"

I usually don't like to write/update inmediately the tags in the files, but I'd like to have a way to filter/list tracks/files which the "taggable" fields are older in the file than in the database, just comparing the "Modified File Date" with the new purposed "Persistent Tags Updated" (just a proposed name).

JRiver for Android already runs on Android TV boxes like the Shield TV.

I currently have JRiver installed on my Shield TV. My feature request would be to have access to my media files which currently reside on a Synology NAS. I don't want to have to maintain a separate media source locally just for JRiver. Thanks

Maybe an idea or feature request. When using the links in tab area as a icon is ok. Why I choose that way?! is because having too many links in the tab as text is overcrowded. Because that tab is also share the same space with the tab views. Making maybe a way to collapse the links tab or something in that area, that cluster of information may be better. But using the links as icon in there it create another problem when using right click method. They appear all, as icon and no information related to them, so I have to use my memory muscle to know which is which.

I use JRiver in Theater mode with the Info panel as my "playing now". It would be perfect if that panel can show track progress like the Playing Now panel does, and even better if it can show current volume level.

Does MC offer any user-level control over the upnp:* (and other) fields used to convey track information for UPnP/DLNA playback?

With MC's capable expression language, such a feature would provide a nice way of dealing with various Renderer differences in field interpretation and/or display without having to actually rewrite tags.  One could modify information as it "heads out the door" so to speak.

I think certain fields, like Composer, have come up numerous times over the years.  If one has a Renderer that wants nothing to do with Composer or Role.Composer, you could still append a parenthetical "(Composer)" to an Artist field that is parsed and ship it out.  Other than providing what would hopefully be a normal level of expression help to users, developers would then no longer be bugged with "could you add this field?" questions.  ;D

Also adding here the request to view the lyrics through the web panel when playing/controlling from a web browser.

It would be really appreciated. Lyrics do help a lot for non-native english speakers, and It doesn't seem too difficult since it's just another text tag. A text box with that info with a scrolling would be more than enough in the html code which shows the playing track.

An on-click event or a small icon to switch between the cover and the lyrics could work really well.

¿ Could this be implemented ?
Thanks.

show / hide view capability for the tree view

Enhancing the shortcut toolbar
« Reply #184 on: October 19, 2020, 12:03:38 pm »

Enhancing the shortcut toolbar capabilities would be a great improvement to the interface.

The low hanging fruit (relatively speaking) is the ability to create custom shortcuts and add them to the existing toolbars on the top / bottom.

Ultimately requested: custom toolbar creation, toolbar docking both horizontally and vertically.
The vertical docking is essential given the form factor of modern displays which are stretched horizontally (there is more screen real estate available on the left and the right sides of the screen as compared with the top and bottom).

Dockable, customizable shortcut toolbars would work well with the split view feature - just picture what one could do with a custom shortcut toolbar docked on the right / left of the split view panel!

The toolbar feature isn't very useful. Very few options availables when comparing with all JRiver functions, dialogs, etc...

Pinnable / persistent tabs
« Reply #185 on: October 19, 2020, 12:45:31 pm »

A lot of confusion / frustration for the new users could be eliminated by allowing any of the open tabs to be pinned.

The pinned tabs would have a visual indicator, always be there (persist) and survive the restart.
When a pinned tab / view panel is active, and the user is exploring other tree nodes:
- JRiver would then open a new tab without closing the pinned tab(s) - just would shift the focus to the newly opened one.
- The unpinned (regular) tabs would work as usual

In order for the pinned tab to be closed, it must be unpinned first.
Add the following commands to the right click menu of the tab (next to the totally useless "execute"):
-Pin Tab (inactive on pinned ones)
-Unpin Tab (inactive on unpinned ones)

Dockable player
« Reply #186 on: October 19, 2020, 01:03:31 pm »

It is time to reflect in the interface that JRiver is much more than a music player (a-la-foobar2000). That JRiver is primarily a powerful repository and organizer of digital content. Of course, the media player is its important (even essential) component, and must be viewed as such. However, it must not be an immovable center-piece taking a good chunk of the vertical real estate.

Request: Make the media player both dockable and lockable.  E.g. one could then un-dock it from the default location on the top and re-dock to the split view panel on the left.

Please use JRiver,  not J-river.  It matters for search.  Thanks.

Jim,
I could only find references to Frozen columns, not Frozen tabs. I wonder if you would kindly point me to the article describing how to freeze the tabs ( I am using MC 27.0.21)
I have changed instances of J-river to JRiver in my posts above.
Thanks,
Ed

I think that pinning tabs would be great. Having tabs work more like our web browsers would be great. It is the way I am used to working and have tried many different column variations but never like it.

It would be great if we could create a JRiver Lyrics server similar to the one for Coverart.
Lyrics lookup would first look at the JRiver community server and then fall back on others (Google,etc...).

Tag-Editor Window:
Would it be possible to detach this window and make it resizable as well?

I posted this in the one-hour or less post, but suspect these could take longer than an hour...

1. video playback already offers options for playback more slowly than normal, but not an option to play back faster than normal.  I play youtube videos at 1.25x most of the time, and very much enjoy the ability to watch something (educational) more quickly than normal.  It seems adding 'faster' to the existing 'slower' options would not take long.

2. offer an option to force the detached video playback window to adhere to the currently playing videos' aspect ratio; so that resizing can be done by dragging only one side of the video and pulling/pushing and the window will remain in the correct aspect ratio.

3. increase the width of the area that allows you to grab a window, or scroll bar.  it seems to be only 1-2 pixels wide at the moment, and requires too much dexterity with a 'fast' mouse to just grab the edge to resize.

If this is/was logistically feasible, it can take ages to get permission from all the people who hold the copyrights for the lyrics, Discogs, MusicBrainz, AllMusic and a few others would have done it years ago!

In full screen Display View (showing cover art and lyrics), moving the mouse to top edge of screen drops down a temporary but stable view of the Mini View controls - a very nice feature.

When mouse is moved to any other edge (left, bottom, right) in Display View, the Mini View control pops out from top but it blinks on and off, pretty much useless.  I see this on two different Windows 10 PCs w MC 27.0.26.

Request:  Modify Display View so that moving mouse to left edge pops out a temporary Tree View, just like in Cover View.  Selecting from the tree would close Display View and open Cover View, landing either in an existing tab (if it matches selection) or a new tab.  Alternatively, just match <CTRL>+5 behavior with tabs at top.  Mousing the Bottom and Right edges should either do nothing at all or be fixed to at least give a stable Mini View control at top.

I wouldn't want to see this removed. It gives users a quick way to see the Track, Artist and Album, without switching Views.

@RoderrickGI:  My request is to leave the top edge functionality as is - it works perfectly to drop down the Mini View which is indeed very useful.  Then replace left edge as described.  Bottom and right edge should either be fixed to expose a stable Mini View like top edge, replaced with some other functionality, or do nothing, since they do not work properly as is, at least for me.

Please explain how this is any different than what’s done for coverart?

Understood Mark. The current functionality is fine for me, but I guess I wouldn't mind if the Control Bar stayed visible while my mouse was on the left, bottom, or right edge, as it does with the top edge. The issue with that though is that if you move the mouse out of the way and it hits an edge, the Control bar stays visible and covers some of the screen. As it is now, it just displays briefly and then closes. I think that is why it works as it currently does, to not permanently cover some of the screen.

But it is up to JRiver anyway.  8)
