Bob, please let me know if I am posting in the right place or if I should be posting a purely Synology problem here at all. Synology tech support is off on weekends and I posted this on their community forum, but haven't gotten a response yet. I have spent over a week working with 6 different Synology techs, but they basically left me with a dead server that couldn't even be communicated with to solve any problems. On my own I figured out how to reopen communications and find a route to recovery.

I had a drive (WD Red 4TB) become degraded. While in the process of replacing it with a new drive (same exact model and 4TB), the 2nd drive crashed without warning. With the NAS totally not functioning or communicating, I removed the 2nd drive, replaced it with the degraded one and after creating a storage pool and volume in the new drive, set to RAID Basic, I copied the music folder from the degraded drive to the new drive. I then removed the degraded drive and replaced it with a 2nd new drive (same exact model and 4TB). I then went to Storage Pool to try to add the 2nd new drive, but Add Drive is grayed out. I have read several community answers to this problem, but none of them fit my scenario. Can anyone tell me what I have to do to make Add Drive functional?

After adding the new drive, I intend to change the RAID Basic to RAID 1 in order to mirror the drives.

I've since gotten 3 answers on the Synology community forum, some of them conflicting. But I'm pretty sure, I've figured it out. I needed to select "Change RAID Type" instead of "Add New Drive", which automatically adds the new drive and changes both drives to the type I selected, which is RAID 1. I will know in the morning if it succeeds, as it is only at 7% right now and the Status is "Changing (re-synchronizing)."
