Abnormal volume behavior when switching tracks
« on: July 22, 2020, 07:37:37 pm »

When JRiver switches tracks, the volume will either increase or decrease several seconds before the track change. Sometimes it will cut out for a split second too. The volume change is is major. It happens when playing a full album or random tracks.
I have run JRiver for years and never experienced this until a couple of weeks ago.
Any help is appreciated.

Note: The only DSP I use is adaptive volume and all files are flac.
Note 2) It does it without any DSP.

Had this problem for certain tracks by certain artists only (really strange).  9 or 10 seconds before track end.  Only started inin the 26.o.98 (64 bit) edition.  Thought it had to do with volume leveling, but does it no matter what.  Went back to older edition and it doesn't happen.

Tried to attach a zipped file that has this behavior, but the site keeps kicking it out.

Also, just went and installed the latest version 26.0.101 and it doesn't do it.

I take that back, it just did it on a different track.  It's so random it's maddening.

What is your audio output device?

ASIO?

Try DirectSound, just to test.

Test without any DSP, VST, etc.

Turn off all DSP.

Wasapi here also.  Just tried a known problem track with Direct and same result.

I went back and downloaded and tried each MC26 64 bit version to see where it started.  MC26.0.73 does not do this.  MC26.0.80 does.  Somewhere between 73 and 80 there was a change.

Thouston if you could go back and verify it's the same on your system it would probably help.  If you go back through the Interact Forum, version 73 is available on page 8, May 11th right now (page may change).

Dawgincontrol, I just sent you an email about this.  Let's continue there.  Thanks.

OK Matt,

Here's the latest.  Tried both versions you sent me; no problem.  So, out of curiosity put back version 80; no problem.  So went and put back version 94 as a test; no problem.

This morning there was a problem with every version until I got to 73.  Now all the versions I reapplied are working correctly.

The good news is I figured out what all the tracks have in common.  They are all HDCD 1.  No other files have ever been problems.  The audio path is still processing HDCD now, but they are ALL working correctly right now.   Before, with about 8-10 seconds left in the track the volume jumped noticeably louder.  That's why this has been frustrating.  If they do it again, I'll stop HDCD encoding and see if that's the culprit.  If it happens I'll add to this thread.

The problem returned today for no apparent reason.  It is the HDCD 1 files that do it.

I disabled "Play as HDCD if possible" and no problem.  If you find the problem, please let me know.  Until then no HDCD.
