ALSA error with new preamp
« on: August 02, 2020, 10:50:00 am »

Hi everyone,
Just put a new preamp in the system (Rotel Michi P5).  It is possible that I have a problem with it being recognized on the network but I think my JRiver problem needs to be sorted first.

I have a QNAP 251+ NAS and all the music lives there.  When I try to play a song, I get:

"Playback Problem
Something went wrong with playback.
Playback could not be started on the output 'ALSA' using the format '44.1khz 2ch'.
The output format may not be supported by your hardware.  You can use DSP Studio to change the output to a compatible format.

Also make sure that your system has a valid sound playback device and that it's properly configured in playback options.

Yesterday, under the ALSA settings there was some kind of Michi choice.  Today, it is gone and there were no changes to the wiring in the system.  It was giving the same error yesterday as it is today.  I may have changed something in JRiver but I don't know what it was.

This is the gist of my settings as I could not copy/paste:
Media Center
version:
Install path: /usr/lib/jriver/Media Center 24/
Interface plugins
JRMark: never run
Memory used:
Handles used:

Advanced system info
Memory & CPU
CPU features:MMS, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1
Memory Available:6.3 GB
Memory Size: 7.4 GB
Total logical Cores: 4
Operating System
Linux - 64 bit

Thanks in advance to anyone who can tell me what to look for.

Are you using the hw: output for the audio device in MC's Options > Audio? If you're using the pulse: output for example, you'll have to resample everything to 48 kHz.

If necessary, you can use DSP Studio > Output Format, to force everything to 48Khz.

I could mistake but it seems that your Rotel must be connected with usb, reading the user manual I could understand that the network connection is just for updates and home automation integration

Thanks to everyone for their replies.

Yes, I am using the USB input.
I believe I tried the 48 khz output but I'll double check asap.
I am not using Pulse, but I didn't see a "hw" setting.  Can you tell me exactly how to get there?

Thanks again

I know how to get to Tools>Options>Audio but don't see where to go from there.

Strangely enough, there was one Michi selection under "Default Audio Device", there was one Michi driver on Saturday when the preamp was connected.  When I looked at JRiver yesterday early in the day, there were no Michi drivers available and (I think after changing the IP address from DHCP to IP/Subnet/Gateway staic IP done by my son-in-law), now there are multiple Michi selections.  I think I tried them all and there was no sound/audio on any of them.

I'm probably not doing a good job of describing this.

Bring up a terminal windows as the user running MC and do the following (with the USB DAC connected)
/usr/lib/jriver/Media\ Center\ 26/alsacap
and post the results.

You're using MC24, aren't you?

I can't recall if alsacap was included with MC24, but you could try this...

Code: [Select]
/usr/lib/jriver/Media\ Center\ 24/alsacap
Otherwise, you'll have to take a screenshot of the dropdown menu under Options > Audio > Audio Device, like this...

If it's set on default [ALSA] you'll need to pick a different audio output. In that drop down menu find the audio output you want to use, and if it has a hw: or front: (also you want to pick the DEV=0 one if there are multiple audio outputs) available for your device, that's what I'd be trying.

alsacap goes all the way back to MC20 so AD's change to the command line will work.
