Crashes when I sync IPOD
« on: April 05, 2003, 07:53:31 pm »

I'm currently using build 143.  I have Windows XP on my PC.

I'm been messing with this for the past 8 hours and need some advice.  Everytime I try to sync with my IPOD, MC9 crashes.  I've tried everything including a complete uninstall, reinsatll, reimport, and I get the same results.

At this point I'm ready to try anything.

Any suggestions?

Randy,

Can you try reformatting your iPod?  Right click on the iPod icon in MC and select "Format"  You will lose all hyour data on your iPod, but then should be OK. If not, try formatting the iPod either from within Windows, or with the iPod updater.

I already tried reformatting.

I've also used to updater to make sure it is as clean as possible.

I tried un-installing everything and re-installing.  I also tried re-installing older versions that I know worked.

As best I sort out, I need to do an un-install that is more complete.  I say this because things are still left after the un-install (default values, my registrtaion data, etc.).

Than a re-install.  That should work if I have a clean system to start with.

I'm looking for advise on the un-install.

Thanks,

Randy

Randy,

When you first click on the iPod icon, can you view your files OK?  You are saying that the crash occurs during a sync. Does it occur in the middle or at the end or are you not sure? What options have you selected when synching (i.e. update tags, delete duplicates)? Have you tried updating your library to be sure that all file paths are still valid?

Steve,

The crash occurs near the beginning of the sync.  It brings up the count of songs in the library to sync and it crashes.  Media Core is what crashes.

I cleared the library and re-imported.

I tried different combinations of options.  All, none, & combinations.

I un-installed and re-installed.  I tried older versions going back to build 105.

I reformatted the IPOD.

I did the updater on the IPOD.

I did all of these things multiple times.

I know the un-install is not complete as my options are still there after I re-install and all of the registration data is still there.

Every other audio product I have works fine.

I've spent over 15 hours on this and can't make it work.  I'm going on a 3 week trip to Asia, so I gave up.  I installed EphPod and imported.  Everything was perfect the first time.

I'll try again in a few weeks when I get back.  I'm guessing it will not work unless someone tells me how to get a clean un-install of MC9.  Maybe it's just the plug-in for the IPOD that needs to be un-installed.

Randy,

There are a lot of people using this Plugin successfully so it is a matter of finding what is unique about your setup. If you want to delete the Plugin, go to the registry and delete the Local Machine/Software/JRiver/Media Jukebox/Plugins/Handheld/Portable Drives key. Before you do this, go to the Plug-in manager and verify that the Portable Drives Plug-in is 9.0.11. It is possible you have the wrong one installed.

If you want to pursue this further, let me know.

Steve,

I'm back from Asia.  Only had to stay 2 weeks, not 3.

Anyway, I tried your suggestion and it worked.

"go to the registry and delete the Local Machine/Software/JRiver/Media Jukebox/Plugins/Handheld/Portable Drives key"

It no longer crashes when I sync.  I did have the correct version of the plugin, so I guess my registry was corrupted.

Thanks for the help... :) :)

Thanks for letting me know it worked out. One less thing to keep me awake.

Steve,

I was thinking about it, and I may know why the registry got corrupted.  I may not be correct, but I thought I would pass on my guess in case it may be useful for someone else.

I was having another problem with MC9 (one of the new BETA versions).  I knew the problem did not exist in older versions, so I started installing older versions to determine when it stopped working.  More recently the plugins come as part of the MC9 install, so I was also installing older versions of the plugin.  My guess is that there is that the registry got corrupted in that process.

Thanks,

Randy

Randy,

Thanks, you may be right. I will keep it in mind if something similar pops up.
