Features I would like to see in v27
« on: August 11, 2020, 02:23:53 pm »

I hope at least some of the below features will be available in the coming release:

- linear phase mode for Parametric EQ (or at least to some of its features such as low pass and high pass filters)
- support for decoding DTS:X and Dolby Atmos to 16/32-channel PCM
- tone mapping for Dolby Vision
- tone mapping for HDR10+
- passthrough of HDR10+
- ability to assign channels to stereo USB DACs (like using 4 stereo USB DACs for 8-channel playback)

Thank you

Thank you
- linear phase mode for Parametric EQ (or at least to some of its features such as low pass and high pass filters) - Can already be done with the convolution engine or VST plugin
- support for decoding DTS:X and Dolby Atmos to 16/32-channel PCM - not a JRiver issue
- tone mapping for Dolby Vision - not a JRiver issue (and Dolby Vision, by definition is tone mapping)
- tone mapping for HDR10+ - not a JRiver issue (HDR10+ is also tone mapping)
- passthrough of HDR10+ - not a JRiver issue
- ability to assign channels to stereo USB DACs (like using 4 stereo USB DACs for 8-channel playback) - USB DAC's don't clock to each other so channels will drift. There are lots of multi-channel DACs available. You can also use one stereo USB DAC that supports 8 channels and output via SPDIF to 3 other DACS, although an 8 channel DAC is much better

Has these been asked before?

1) support for getting more album/artist information from the internet (I see this is needed for JRiver to stay competitive to Roon.  my friend is a Roon user and its interface for album info is way ahead of what I am getting from JRemote).

2) Linux server support for running JRiver without X11 GUI

3) Support for fast forwarding for video recorded from the TV tuner in JRiver

4) Alexa integration - would be nice if I can play a playlist using Alexa

5) Support for online streaming services (apple music doesn't work from the browser tab)

If I only get #1 supported in MC27+JRemote combination I would be very happy!!

Thanks
Steven

2) Linux server support for running JRiver without X11 GUI

I believe you can use a dummy X server to workaround this. It *should* work fine.

4) Alexa integration - would be nice if I can play a playlist using Alexa

House Band.

5) Support for online streaming services (apple music doesn't work from the browser tab)

This has been asked a lot, especially lately. I'd do a forum search on streaming and read those posts on why streaming service integration isn't likely.

Yes I am already using dummy X server workaround.  It is a nice to have if I can make by RPi completely without GUI

House Band.

Tried House Band before and found some limitations.   will try again,   it is a nice to have.

my biggest ask is 1) support for getting more album/artist information from the internet.

Any chance of getting it?

I'm not sure, it's up to JRiver. The problem(s) with that kind of thing are 1) JRiver usually have to pay for API access to certain information scraping services. Like in the case of TheTVDB where metadata lookup costs became unacceptable so they dropped TheTVDB in favor of TheMovieDB. 2) With things like song lyrics there's been issues with that lately as well, like AZLyrics IP banning users who hammered their website with many connection requests when looking up lyrics so JRiver removed AZLyrics from their lookup.

Metadata and lyrics scraping is a tricky thing, as likely is artist/album scraping. Are there any open services which provide API access like that? I'm guessing they'd have to roll their own service potentially?

In the MC interface, look for the links in the upper right corner when playing.  Wiki, etc.

Yeah, but roon is not really a competitor as it is really expensive!
(And using the jriver gui, you can also get a lot of informations, see the theater view thread. But, for sure, this is really difficult,  all these different lookup programms and code. )

I like Roon concept, I like integration with Tidal, but..
- it lacks any other integrations with streaming services, I have Spotify Premium for the whole family and I'm not going to pay again for Tidal
- No support for VST, and I particular interested in Dirac
- Given that it is largely based on Sooloos code, not just founders came from there, you can even see Sooloos in Roon's logs   ;D  - it is still so buggy and unstable! there are bugs they are dragging for years, and these are basic issues related to its internal database, issues like connectivity, etc.
- and Roon is expensive without any proportions. That's good for audiophiles, I know.

Probably my ignorance, but two features I would like:

1. My laptop has a 256 gb hard drive (C:/) and a 1 tb SSD (X:/). The SSD drive is full with Rock & Jazz so all my Classical is on the C drive. Fine, except if I want to move from the X drive on Gizmo to the C drive I have to select a different library on the laptop and then reload the new directory - I can't do this via the Gizmo. Would it be possible to select different directories via Gizmo?

2. I convert a lot of stuff to DSD using MC - makes life a lot easier for my DAC. A great feature for those looking for audio enhancements. However I can't then use DSP - it need all the arrows blue to run in DSD. I'd like to be able to use the equalizer for a DSD (.dsp) file. Not sure why - is this something that could be achieved as an enhancement?

If you're bitstreaming DSD, you can't use DSP with it.

PCM and DSD are fundamentally different structures. PCM stores a value corresponding to the sound level at each time interval. DSD does not store an actual sould level value, just a 1 or 0 to indicate where the level goes up or down. Also, DSD time intervals are 64 more frequent than PCM, comparing CD to SACD.  Turns out, it is pretty straightforward to do DSP's for the PCM structure, but frightfully difficult for the DSD structure.  So, any changes to DSD files are done by converting to PCM and using the PCM tools. Even the people mastering the DSDs do this.   Even something as simple as changing the volume of DSD is too complicated to do using current computer power. This is not just a MC issue. It is true for everyone, including the pros.  Do not expect this to change.

Hi, it would be nice to be able to have an audio stream change button in the remote menu of JRemote (IOS), usable while watching bluray. Thank you!

Thanks.
