Squeezebox Touch & DSP Parametric EQ Settings
« on: July 20, 2020, 08:28:12 pm »

I cannot access DSP functions using Squeezebox Touch.

Squeezebox plays wma.lossless files with "Mode" set to original (thanks to prior forum suggestions). But the DSP studio option is greyed out.

I changed:

Mode: Specified Output Format
Format:PCM L1 No header.

DSP becomes active but the Squeezebox will not play, the selected album merely skips from track to track.

I tried
Mode: Specified Output Format
Format:PCM 16 Bit.

Same result as above.

I have had great success using DSP and REW EQ settings going through the "Player" option in MC directly to the DAC from my pc.

Question: can MC DSP functions be used via Squeezebox Touch?

Regards

Is it using DLNA / UPnP?

If so, this will work:

thanks for the advice, making progress but still not sure that things are right.

Media network DLNA boxes are checked (attached) so I assume that I am using DLNA, SBT does show upnp address.

I followed the wiki link and set mode to "specified output format".

If I select any of the 16 bit or 24 bit formats MC will not play. Each track on the album is skipped.

If I select any of the MP3 formats the SBT will play at quite high bit rate ~1000 kbps. image attached where MC shows playback at 16/44 wma BUT the SBT shows MP3 playback. image attached.

So now a little confused as to what format is actually being played.

I tried the "Associate with DLNA Server" menu option but the option "only one server used by default" is shown greyed out.

When playing direct from LMS the SBT does display wma format.

I would really appreciate any advice on how to get MC playback through the SBT with non-MP3 format.

OK, I am resigned to the fact that my aging SBT (24/96 capable) can only process MP3 signal when using DSP features of MC.

I now realize that to use MC with DSP and to avoid MP3 data transfer I need to purchase a new streaming device.

To meet my set-up constraints, the new device must have Ethernet input and co-axial digital output capability.

Question: What specification(s) should I look for on potential new network players to ensure that I avoid the above "MP3 only" situation?

Did you create a DLNA server (Tools ->Options -> Media Network -> Add or Configure DLNA Server), assign the required DSP settings to it and associate your player with that?

Also run Andrew's Whitebear tool against your Renderer and see what that says: https://www.whitebear.ch/dmra

Yup. It’s a while since I had a Squeezebox, so I can’t recall what media it can play. But I suspect it cannot play L16. However the DMRA renderer report will tell us that. And once we know the answer I may be able to suggest a setting that would work.

Many thanks for all replies.

I will explore IdPi which appears to potentially give the I/O options that I need.

I did follow the DLNA Tools>Options>Media Network>Add or Configure DLNA route. And added suggested REW EQ settings to the DSP dialogue box. The Parametric EQ seems to have worked as checked by measurements using the Stereophile test CD track for frequency response. The MC frequency response with DSP correction is much smoother than the non-corrected response via LMS direct.

However the MC signal is designated as MP3 on the SBT. LMS is WMA losssless, all my audiofiles are WMA.Lossless. Not sure if that is a problem?

On the DLNA server association, I find that confusing because when I click on associate player, I get the greyed out option "only one server used by default". Image attached.

Appreciate the DMRA test option suggestion, I have downloaded and run that test and emailed to AFG,

Looking Forward To Progress

You can set the filetype you want to play by configuring the DLNA Server audio conversion.  Tools > Options > Media Network.

I follow the path. Tools>Options>Media Network. Audio Formats to convert are greyed out and not selectable.

For that audio format list to light up you need to select "Specified Format Only When necessary".

Then input the format you want to send, and from the list choose the formats you want to convert to that format. If it is not selected it will be sent as original.

This thread and the link in the first entry provide more information:

According to this, you can select Convert to L16 PCM No Header..
