Is it possible to export MC Playlists to Spotify?
« on: September 07, 2020, 03:46:25 pm »

I use MC as my main player and have friends who use spotify. They ask me for my playlists on spotify but I dont use it.

Is there some way for me to export my MC playlists so that those on spotify can find the tracks themselves?

I'd be happy to set up a spotify account if that is what is needed.

Many thanks

Can Spotify import any standard playlists?

If it can export a playlist, we might be able to figure out how to write the format from MC.

I tried to get this to work many different ways.  I was only able to get partial success by using a third-party site to transfer playlist content from one online site to another.  I could not get playlist file transfer to work at all.  In my case, I transferred playlists from last.fm to Spotify with a large percentage of success.

Spotify can import local MP3/FLAC, but not playlists. Not sure if there's any command line to do it though, I think it's only via the GUI client.

They have a REST API to manage playlists:
https://developer.spotify.com/documentation/web-api/reference/playlists/

However, adding items to a Spotify playlist requires that you find the Spotify ID of each song (you can't directly upload your existing MP3s this way).

You could take a look at Soundiiz (https://soundiiz.com/). Via that service you can import an m3u extended playlist you exported from JRiver and transfer that playlist to Spotify. This will only work for songs that are in the Spotify library.

Thanks Bertje, this looks like it might do the trick.

I will let you know how I get on with this method.

I was a premium member of soundiiz, but their playlist import was 100% unreliable last I used it.  This was the site I refer to above when I stated I only had success with last.fm sync to spotify.  I have since ended my subscription with this service.

That would be a great feature - I would use that if available. There must be some kind of API or method because currently Shazam intefaces to Spotify. When you shazam tracks it builds a list in Spotify called "My Shazam Tracks". It's not importing any files, just the list somehow.

I signed up for Soundiiz.com but I cant see JRiver or MC as one of the source options for a playlist...

How do I actually use it to transfer my playlist to spotify?

I managed to transfer some of the items but the majority did not. So this did not work.

out of 130 tracks there were only 40 shown in Spotify....

Can Spotify not read the playlist files that MC creates and exports?

I have no idea. and I can't see where in Spotify one can find out.

I am not big on Spotify, I use MC for all my music needs. It is just that I need to send a playlist to someone who uses spotify..

Spotify does not read any formats.  They provide API for developers and share information that you must find their documentation of to use.

Soundiiz, on the other hand, makes use of Spotify's API and other streaming sites to allow syncing content.  Soundiiz is supposed to allow for importing of playlists and other external files, but as I mentioned and the original poster found out himself, it is very unreliable.
