Odd Action When Starting JRiver 26 And Now JRiver 27
« on: September 09, 2020, 04:15:08 am »

Good Morning,

Just recently, on starting JRiver Media Center 26, I've noticed that the program does not start in the usual way. My computer screen goes out of focus, with the basics of JRiver Media Center in the background, as though viewed through a fog and my computer locks, until the program fully opens, when the screen returns to normal and the program can be used.

This morning I updated the program to JRiver Media Center 27 and the same applies.  This is not confined to this computer, so I was wondering if this is how the program will open from here on.  It's only recently that this action has happened.

When the program is fully open, it functions as it always has done, but this start up activity is just "odd".

Is this the new norm?

Has anyone else had the same issue

I've seen this happen with new MC installs when Windows Defender wasn't tamed. If you're using Windows Defender and you haven't tamed it yet, that's something you might want to do. It could apply to other antivirus apps as well.

If it's not that, are you loading files from a NAS or something? I could see how the system spinning up the drive could cause a delay like that too.

Hello,
No, I use Bit Defender anti virus.
This is so odd, because its the only program that carries out this odd function and it simply "locks" the computer whilst the program is starting to run.  Once it is running there is no problem.  Bit Defender usually stops any program it doesn't like, but it has allowed JRiver access without problem.

Bitdefender is known to cause issues with Media Center. You'll have to add Media Center's executables and folders to Bitdefender's exclusions.

Hell Again,
I have tried your suggested Bit Defender settings, but it has made no difference at all on my current new desktop computer.
I have tried the JRiver 26 program on another computer I have (I recently replaced my desktop).  That does not have Bit Defender on it.
It is acting in the same way.  When opening the program, on that computer, again everything freezes for a short while.  The desktop screen goes out of focus and remains that way until the program opens at the home screen and functions normally.
That computer did not display this activity until quite recently, so there must be an oddity that is upsetting both computers running different anti-virus programs.

Where are your media files located? On NAS? Do you spin down HDD?

Hi,

On a computer drive on this desktop.  It's a drive I took from my previous desktop that went belly-up a few weeks back.  So I downloaded JRiver 26 initially to this computer and have just updated to JRiver 27.

This odd startup was happening on my previous computer, after it's last program update.  I was going to query it then, but of course, the computer packed up, so that brought an end to that enquiry.

I have JRiver on a small media only computer that I use for everyday streaming.  The same happens on that computer, that is running JRiver 26 (not updated yet).  It does not use Bit Defender but Windows antivirus. Again this started after the last update on that computer, which would be about a month ago.  That computer uses a USB connected hard drive with my digital library on that drive.  Basically all FLAC tracks.

So in summary, this is happening on two separate computers, using different antivirus protection, assuming that is the cause.

It does not use Bit Defender but Windows antivirus.

As with Bitdefender, Windows Defender also has to be tamed (exclusions for executables and folders) for Media Center, as it can interfere with it as well.

It's possible your HDD from belly up computer is going bad (consumer HDD will keep trying to read bad sectors for looong time before reporting it'ss bad) ... or it could be simply SATA cable not attacked properly.

Use tools like CrystalDiscInfo to check health of your HDD.

EDIT: some HDD have automatic spin down that can only be disabled with manufacturers tools (spinning HDD up from sleep can cause slowdowns too)

Hi,

I've downloaded Crystal Disk Info and the program has determined all of my drives are good.

I will have to live with this startup of the program, until a remedy can be found.

Thank you for your suggestion.
