Manjaro
« on: September 11, 2020, 05:56:24 pm »

I would like to share with other JRiver customers and community members on this forum that I am currently using Manjaro 20.1 64-bit "Mikah" GNU/Linux on my Kingston A400 SATA-III 6 GB/s 1.92 TB solid-state disk inside my late 2019 Computer Upgrade King Hewlett Packard Omen 15t gaming notebook PC while Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit Pro edition version 1909 as of the current September 2020 Microsoft Patch Tuesdays security updates installed on my ADATA SX8100NP M.2 PCI-e NVMe x4 2 TB solid-state disk in a dual-boot configuration.

More importantly, I discovered this Arch GIT software repository for JRiver Media Center 27 64-bit: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/jriver-media-center/. I followed the instructions to install base-devel, git, and other required software packages and dependencies and I successfully downloaded, built, and installed it on Manjaro while licensing it and I restored my media library database file without any technical issues.

JRiver Media Center 27 64-bit for GNU/Linux now allows me to log into my JRiver Cloudplay account and to stream lossless music playlists along with using my Silicondust HDHomeRun Connect Quatro connected to my Antop AT-402B antenna along with my Perc Data account and I can watch over-the-air television broadcasts.

It also allows me to create a JRiver media server and for both Apple macOS 10.15.6 Supplemental Update 64-bit "Catalina" running JRiver Media Center 26 64-bit and Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit Pro edition version 1909 as of September 2020 Microsoft Patch Tuesdays security updates to access my media server and to stream my private media library at my apartment or when I visit a friend's apartment to stream remotely from a different IP address.

Moreover, I got Ivacy VPN and AirVPN with the network port forwarding features and configuring my Verizon FiOS Advanced Gateway Router through its network port forwarding feature to open up my custom HTTP and SSL encrypted HTTPS network ports successfully while creating a user name and password to authenticate into my media server without a hitch.

My Macbook Pro and Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit Home and Pro edition PCs have no problems accessing my JRiver media server and I can stream from JRiver Cloudplay and watch over-the-air television broadcasts at home or remotely while these two other PCs have access to my media server. This means that I have full and unfettered access to my JRiver media server at home or when I travel, including most of the JRiver Media Center features working intact.

I understand that Computer Upgrade King and Hewlett Packard do not support GNU/Linux and JRiver does not support Arch or Manjaro or my personal virtual private network subscriptions, but I got everything to just work with minimum fuss and muss.

Now, I wait for the JRiver team to release Media Center 27 64-bit for Apple macOS 10.15.x 64-bit "Catalina" sometime in the future and I hope that the JRiver Cloudplay and Television features are going to just work too.

Yay!

I had no problems configuring Manjaro's usage of Ubuntu's Uncomplicated Firewall and I set it to allow access to the specific IP address of my Silicondust HDHomeRun Connect Quatro television tuner and to include my custom HTTP and HTTPS network ports via TCP for both incoming and outgoing network traffic. Configuring Ivacy VPN and AirVPN to use the same custom HTTP and HTTPS network ports via TCP was easy as my Verizon FiOS Advanced Gateway Router.

I have several personal virtual private network subscriptions including 2021 Kaspersky Security Cloud Family and Kaspersky Secure Connection which I renew annually on January 8th, Ivacy VPN including their add-on features such as network port forwarding and firewall features which is a lifetime subscription, VPNSecure.Me which is another lifetime subscription, AirVPN via their Eddie-UI desktop client which is available for Arch-based GNU/Linux desktop operating systems as well as the typical Debian, Ubuntu, and Red Hat-based GNU/Linux distributions for three years, and Perfect-Privacy VPN which has their VPN Manager desktop client available for Debian and Ubuntu for two years [there is an independent GIT Arch User Repository to download, build, install, sign in, and use it for Arch and Manjaro].

I took my mid-2015 Apple Macbook Pro 15" with Retina Display high-end and old mobile workstation to my close friends' apartments here in Nutley, New Jersey and JRiver Media Center 26 as of the latest build version 64-bit for Apple macOS 10.15.6 Supplemental Update "Catalina" had no problems connecting to my JRiver media servers running on both Manjaro 20.1 64-bit "Mikah" and Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit Pro edition as of the current September 2020 Microsoft Patch Tuesdays security updates. For both GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows 10, I installed, licensed, restored my media library database file, setup my JRiver media servers including my custom HTTP and HTTPS network ports via TCP, set a user name and password, and configured the Audio to not convert the audio and to set it at 24-bit. I tested remote access to my JRiver media servers on Manjaro and Windows 10 multiple times including non-encrypted remote access over the Internet to both the HTTP and HTTPS network ports via TCP. I connected to each personal virtual private network and re-tested both HTTP and HTTPS network traffic into my JRiver media server on both desktop operating systems without any problems. I streamed my audio, images, videos, JRiver Cloudplay, and I watched over-the-air television remotely at my friends' apartments without any problems.

Then, I took my late 2019 CUK HP Omen 15t gaming notebook PC to my friends' apartments and I re-tested the same remote connections using HTTP and HTTPS with a non-encrypted connection to the Internet and while connected to each personal virtual private network subscription one at a time. No problems.

Perfect-Privacy VPN allows up to four cascading multi-hop encrypted network connections to the VPN servers worldwide and they allow network port forwarding via direct connections as well as port mirroring capabilities and features. So, I configured my JRiver media server to use the current and custom network port forwarding rules on Manjaro and Microsoft Windows 10 on my mid-2017 AVA Direct gaming desktop PC and I took both my Macbook Pro and HP Omen 15t to my friends' apartments to test non-encrypted and encrypted network connections over the Internet and it still keeps working just fine.

No problems!

AirVPN via their Eddie-UI desktop client allows me to connect the Department of the U.S. Navy's The Onion Router network and to make it work in tandem with their virtual private network together. So, I installed the latest Oracle Java JRE and JDK 14 64-bit and I downloaded, installed, licensed and used Dazzleships' SelekTOR for both GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit to connect to the TOR network relays worldwide. Next, I configured AirVPN via their Eddie-UI desktop client to take the three-hop TOR circuit and to integrate it with the virtual gateway servers. AirVPN also allows for double-hop VPN network traffic as well via their Eddie-UI desktop client. Once I got my three-hop TOR circuit going with AirVPN via their Eddie-UI desktop client, JRiver Media Center and media server 27 64-bit Master License on both Manjaro 20.1 64-bit "Mikah" and Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit Pro edition version 1909 as of the current September 2020 Microsoft Patch Tuesdays security updates worked flawlessly with both my Macbook Pro and HP Omen 15t at my apartment and when I traveled with both of them to my friends' apartments here in Nutley, New Jersey without any technical issues. Streaming was much slower especially with the combination of the TOR circuit and double-hop encrypted network tunnel, but it was decent with a bit of choppiness and lag randomly, but it still worked flawlessly.

I have a Plex.Tv account and I pay for Plex Pass monthly for $5.32 USD including New Jersey sales tax. I downloaded, installed, signed in, and created two separate Plex media servers for both Manjaro 20.1 64-bit "Mikah" and Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit Pro edition version 1909 as of the current September 2020 Microsoft Patch Tuesdays security updates successfully. I configured the Ubuntu Uncomplicated Firewall to allow the required network port 32400 via TCP as well as a custom network port forwarding rule to mirror to the one established by Plex.Tv within Manjaro, my Verizon FiOS Advanced Gateway router, AirVPN via their Eddie-UI desktop client, and Perfect-Privacy VPN via their VPN Manager. I have no problems accessing my Plex media servers on Manjaro or Windows 10 at home or when I travel to my friends' apartments in Nutley, New Jersey. I can access my audio, music, videos, and pictures and stream my premium content within my private media library at home or when I travel to friends' apartments remotely. Everything just works with my Macbook Pro and HP Omen 15t laptops at home or at a friend's apartment. No problems!

I also use Manjaro.
I bought JRiver Media Center 24 several years ago.
I'll never buy a new version until there's an AppImage.
The AUR package is not a bad way to install this application but it's far from perfect.

Considering Media Center only officially supports Debian, I wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

IMO, the AUR PKGBUILD works just fine.

You're right. It works fine, but ...
PKGBUILD is good ONLY for Linux distributions based on Arch.
APPIMAGE is good for EVERY distribution there is.
This format is distro-agnostic, and using it, JRiver could forget about all the problems related to compatibility in Linux and its hundreds of distributions.

Like I said, JRiver only builds Media Center for Debian and only officially supports Debian, it working on any other distro is a unsupported bonus which you're basically on your own for.

So, I wouldn't expect them to support AppImage, Snap, Flatpak, etc. It's been brought up before and I believe Bob has looked into it, but certain limitations is what prevented it from happening. So again, wouldn't hold my breath.

I know. I don't think they will change their politics about it. I don't understand it but that's the way it is.
On the other hand, there are many limitations for other formats like Snap and flatpak, but that's not the case with AppImage. This was checked with the AppImage developers a long time ago.
Greetings!
