WDM Driver - does it work using DLNA server?
« on: September 20, 2020, 01:44:14 pm »

I just discovered WDM when I read about and upgraded to MCC27.

I was able to get it to work successfully with my DirectStrean DAC when using USB, but cannot get it to play sounds when I switch to Media Network, which sounds superior when playing local files and streaming Cloudplay.

But I was hoping to play Amazon HD using WDM via DLNA. Same with Youtube audio or any other streaming website. Can this be done?

No, the WDM driver doesn't work over DLNA.

I don't understand what does "the WDM driver doesn't work OVER DLNA" mean.  I have being using my laptop as a DLNA server.  Does that mean that I can not use the WDM driver?  I have tried to installed it following the instructions in the Wiki, with no sesults.
 No sound at all.
So, do I have to undo the DLNA server in order to use the WDM driver?

It means that any audio input to MC via the JRiver WDM driver cannot be output to a DLNA Renderer.

You can still play other media via DLNA a Renderer. You can still input audio into MC using the WDM driver. You can't do both together for the one audio stream.

As I understand it - the experts can correct me - DLNA wants to know the length of the track that is being played. However, since WDM is just getting a stream, it cannot provide DLNA with the length of the track.  Think about how this would work with, for example, a podcast.   That is a simplified view. Maybe the DLNA experts can provide more detail.  A lot of people have asked for this, but it seems there is no simple solution.

WDM is an audio driver.  It's not a network services protocol like DLNA.

WDM connects the inbound audio from an application to an audio device, not a network device.

JRiver is acting as an audio driver when you use WDM.

In addition to what dtc and Jim said, DLNA is file based and when using the WDM driver there's no file to send as the audio is being streamed through the driver, so it won't work that way.

What if you knew the streaming track info/metadata beforehand? Say a Tidal track info. Is it possible to form a file container, send it to DLNA renderer?

Audirvana does that but it accesses Tidal service from within Audirvana itself, maybe that's requirement?

That wouldn't matter, it still wouldn't work when using the WDM driver.
