There are no good rippers for Linux.  One of the main reasons I paid for a new JRiver license was to have something that would rip my CDs.  But I don't see where to launch the CD ripper.  The doc says to do it in the action window, but the action window I have doesn't have a ripper action.

Is there something missing from this build?   I've seen mention of ripping in earlier revs of JRiver for Linux.

I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 on an HP i7 laptop with 8 GB memory and 400G free drive space.

What i want from a ripper is to load in a CD, have it read the CD, extract track names, and attempt to extract data from one of the CDDB music databases out there.  dbPoweramp does that, but it's a Windows app and won't load up under WINE on Ubuntu 20.04.

I'd read that JRiver could rip CDs on Linux, and that's why I bought it.  Am I going to regret this?

In the meantime you should be able to install Exact Audio Copy in Wine on Linux, I've done that before several years ago.

I posted in this forum because I mistakenly posted in the MC25 forum and didn't think it would be seen by the right people.  Won't happen again.

In the meantime I got Exact Audio Copy installed and running, but what is the URL for a working metadata CDDB service?  freedb.org is long gone.   What do you use?

In Exact Audio Copy 1.5 freedb has been replaced with MusicBrainz (assuming you installed the plugin for it during install). Can also switch to the CUETools DB Metadata plugin as well, but MusicBrainz works great as a replacement.

I installed Exact Audio Copy 1.5, but I only saw the one download.   No mention of a plugin, where to find them or how to add it.  The stock config for 1.5 is still pointing to the long gone freedb.  It may be that the CDDB lookup plugin is part of the 1.5 install, but without the proper URL to point to, it's worthless.  What URL is your install pointed at?    You find the setting at:

Assuming you installed the plugin when the checkboxes are shown in the installer, in EAC > Metadata options > Metadata Provider tab > from the drop down menu select MusicBrainz Metadata Plugin. Ignore the freedb tab, it's more-or-less useless now.

I did not install the plugin because I didn't know about or see anything written about it until you mentioned it.  I see no mention of it at the Exact Audio Copy site.  I pulled down Exact Audio Copy at:

There's no mention of a plugin.   Where do I get it?

I did find something called CUETools Database Plugin for EAC.  I pulled it down and copied all of the contents into the same directory as the EAC.exe executable.  From:

Still not there when firing up EAC.   No mention of MusicBrainz in the Metadata Provider tab under Metadata options.

Was this some sort of option I should have selected as part of the EAC install?

Just for grins, I reinstalled EAC and saw an option screen where it asks what features I'd like to install, including the MusicBrainz plugin.  I accept it along with everything else and ran the install.  Still no MusicBrainz available in the Metadata options tool.

If you don't need AccurateRip, and are already doing without MusicBrainz, and would rather RIP CDs in linux without having to use Wine, fre:ac  is cross platform and from little I have used it to RIP CDs (my preferred solution on any platform, by far, is XLD in macOS) it seems to work quite well. The developer in different posts has said both AccurateRip and MusicBrainz support are being worked on, and may one day be included.

There is another CD ripping option in Linux.  K3B is a CD creator/ripping suite that works pretty well and can rip to flac or ogg or even mp3( :-( ).
Typically there is some control afforded as to the level of compression you desire within the FLAC file, but it seems that K3B decides that for you.  In Windows-based Mediamonkey to which I hold a Gold license, you can choose the level of compression.   That's really not an issue for me or most people with reasonable processing power anyway.  In the past, I have tried to install Mediamonkey via WINE, which was an erratic, unstable disaster.   

I know of a few guys who routinely rip in Mediamonkey Gold in Windows, and simply copy the files over to their Linux machine.I do that with my Arch laptop which sends the stream out to my Kitsune Spring Level III DAC via USB to a D-to-D Singxer converter and then sends it to the Kitsune Spring unit via I2S.  The sound is quite good.

I just ripped a new CD set I bought from DG: Leonard Bernstein's A-to-D recording of Beethoven's nine symphonies (5CD set- DG 4837393 which was recently remastered from the original analogue tapes.  The K3B ripped CD sound is extraordinary in comparison to the original 1980 release.  Deutsche Grammophone did remaster at 24-bit/192 KHz in 5.0 surround sound. I could swear I hear Bernstein's sinus trouble at times.

Maybe I am doing it wrong, but here is how I grab the source WAV files when in a rush (this is a ~30sec screencast). That is Pop!_OS 20.10 (Ubuntu derivative). The audio CD just shows up in Gnome as a bunch of WAVs and you drag-copy them to where MediaCenter will pick them up for further conversion.

You can see in the video that VLC also recognizes the CD. If I click on that VLC button there it offers to FLAC-encode the CD, plus some other options. Naturally, you can open Audio CDs directly as a device in VLC if not running Gnome. No need to go with Windows software - that is unless you need to bulk-rip and auto-populate the metadata... Which, yeah...
