MOTU 16A WASAPI Exclusive Mode Can't Connect

I cannot connect using WASAPI to my MOTU 16A interface when I select "open device for exclusive access" in "playback options / device settings".

Works fine in shared mode. Exclusive mode for the MOTU is enabled in "audio devices / properties / advanced".

Any suggestions?
