Ubuntu Questions
« on: October 21, 2020, 02:03:20 pm »

I do have a master license for MC26.  Last time I tried MC under Ubuntu, everything worked for the most part.  However, Monkey's Audio did not work only in MediaCenter.  Ubuntu players played the same APE files with no issues whatsoever.  Nothing was done to resolve this, so I stopped using MC under Linux awhile back.  Now I have ceased using APE and am slowly converting all of my APE files to the latest FLAC.  The APE support is now no longer a concern to me.

This weekend I plan to wipe my drives, remove Windows 10 Professional, and install Ubuntu LTS 20.04 instead.  I will run VMWare Workstation under Ubuntu with a Windows 10 guest when I absolutely require Windows 10 application support.  If MC26 works under Ubuntu, this would be great.  I realize you test only under Debian.  Ubuntu is typically ahead in versions that Debian is.  Does anyone have experience with MC27 running under Ubuntu LTS 20.04?  Is everything working as expected, or are you facing any issues?  I am wondering if I want to consider upgrading my master license for media player support.

Thanks.

MC27 works fine in Ubuntu 20.04. I'm surprised APE doesn't work though, somebody should page Matt and let him know about that one. ;)

He looked at it.  I posted on forums awhile back.

The response at the time was, "it works for me."

You shared a couple files that were just baked.  Something corrupted them.

If you have other files that don't play you think should (and verify in Monkey's Audio) then please share.

Thanks.

Could you make one of the APE files available to matt at jriver dot com?  Thanks.

Since this happened so long ago with such an older version, let me see if I can reproduce with a more recent Linux version.

If this issue remains present, I will send a file.

This issue with APE files is resolved under the latest MC26 and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.  MC reads APE files and plays them properly now.

Also, this version has a setting to send native DSD.  I don't recall seeing that in the Windows version.  I like the Linux version better.

The native DSD option is under MC's Options > Audio > Audio Device > Device Settings > the Output DSD files in native DSD format box. The caveat here is the Linux kernel needs to support DSD for your DAC, if it doesn't you're going to have to use DoP. Also make sure you're using the front: or hw: outputs for your DAC too.

My DAC has common drivers, so I am sure the support is there.  Moving it to an easy-to-find location under Linux is preferred to burying it deep in hidden options.

MC26 under Linux looks much better than that older version I last used.  26 does not yet have HTML support or show Track Info under Playing Now view.  It would be great if HTML was added to MC27.  I display lots of useful info under now playing that MediaCenter, by default, keeps hidden.

MC27 does have internal browser support as well trackinfo now. MC26 did also support the internal browser, possibly not on your platform because it used an older build environment.

Thanks.  I reverted the behavior to match MC26 now.  Also, my build is now updated.  I was able to replace Noire with my customized version.  I am almost back to what I expect under Linux.  I just need to revert ModernCards Dark to the previous version and all will be restored.

Thanks again!
