renaming files

after importing a file into mc and quiting the program i cannot rename the file outside of mc.  when i try to do so i get a message that the file is in use even though mc is no longer running.

also, is there an easy way to rename a file from within media center other than changing the name tag and then renaming the file according to tags?

The file may be read-only.  I've seen this when I copied data files from CD's.

yes simply fo to the file name field, and type in the file name you want, it will change on the hard drive (as jimh said it must not be write protected)

I just tested it so i know it works.

Obviously it'd be easier if there was a field for just the filename and one for the folder name (not at all hinting for any features for v9.1) :)

All songs you copy to your hard drive from a cd with mp3 on it are 'read only'

I have had a similar problem to this in the past where I have been unable to delete files associated with MC even when MC is not running.  These were video files.  The only way I could delete them was through MCs My Computer node.  Explorer always told me the file was in use...

That just means MC failed to properly release the file handle once it was done with it.  In other words, it didn't close the file.

Usually, the only remedy is to reboot Windows.

Edit:  This could be independent of MC.  Windows Explorer, even in the latest, fully patched OS, is notorious for opening audio files and not properly closing them even though you moved on to another directory.
