Ripping CD not working [Solved]
« on: November 17, 2020, 10:56:43 am »

Hi

I bought this box set...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Studio-Albums-1978-1991-Dire-Straits/dp/B085HLCN96

Every CD I rip in this box set I get "Unknown error from encoder". I keep pressing OK and it does not go away, so I have to force quit the application.

Never had this error before.
I'm using Windows 10 and JRiver 26.0.107

Any ideas? Thx.

What format are you ripping to?  Try another.

They aren't common,  but there are a few copy protected CD's.

A random thought, but as a test, you might try removing the ' at the end of Communique (or replace it with a é) and see if that makes any difference.

Does it happen with all CDs or just that one?

Thanks...

Well I've just tested on some CD's I've previously ripped fine and I'm getting the same error. I figured Windows Media Player may have been uninstalled by Windows (this has happened before) so I reinstalled via powershell...

Get-WindowsCapability -Online | where name -like Media* | Add-WindowsCapability -Online

Unfortunately this did not work....

Kinda stuck right now. I need to check the other instances I have of MC on other machines.

There is at least one apparent bug here, or at the very least poor behaviour, and that is that when it shows the error message (see screenshot above) I can't cancel out of the error message, it keeps appearing, and there is no way to quit the application other than via task manager.

What format are you ripping to? If it's WMA, I seem to recall some Windows Update broke it in the past so you might try something else.

It's the encoder that seems to be the problem.  What is it?  Try ripping to WAV, just as a test.  If that works, try FLAC.

Antivirus software causes a lot of odd problems.

You did not answer Jim's question...

If it is indeed .wma, and you must have that, see here...

This option, with those files, still work for me here with MC 27 and Windows 10 20H2

OK so I rebooted into another Windows 10 instance on the same PC (I run multiboot), I'm running 19041.572.
Window update is up to date, bitdefender antivirus is fully uninstalled (I rebooted again), Windows defender realtime scan is off. I have exactly the same issue.

I am normally ripping to FLAC and it has worked fine until now.

I tried "Wavpack" and "MP3 Encoder" - same issue.

However it works with Windows Media, so I guess that provides a clue (see attached), although I haven't worked out what to do.

I will try to see what happens on my other PC (a laptop) when I can.

Thanks

I tried uncompressed wave and that kinda worked, some tracks would not playback and I noticed some 0kb files...

So I decided to change the destination of the ripped files, presently it's on my server via UNC path, I changed it to a local hard drive, and BINGO, I can rip to FLAC without issues. So it's some issue with the destination - but why! I'm not out of disk space.

So I decided to put the UNC path back in, I type in \\myserver\music\cd and click OK, the dialogue box closes, however the entry does not change! (Still a local path that I put in).

I can easily browse that UNC path via file explorer. I tried to delete the cached passwords on the local machine, rebooted the PC and my server, recached the password, no change in behaviour... even tried running it as admin....

hmmm.....

So I restored the library from a backup, that brought back the UNC server path and the original error.
Changing to local drive makes it work again, but then I can't change back to the UNC path.

And there we have it - not sure what to do now.

OK so I've tested some more. I still have the same symptoms, I am able to browse the network share on the menu via:
File -> Open media file.

I've now tested on a new PC (my laptop) and get exactly the same issues.

So lets summarise, on Windows 10:

1) I can rip a CD to a local hard drive without issue.
2) I can browse my network share via File -> Open media file.
3) I can browse my network share via Windows File Explorer.
4) I can't rip to my server via UNC path (\\server\music\cd) without "Unknown error from encoder", files do get written partially however on the server. The error message goes if I change from FLAC to WAV, occasionally it does do a successful rip. I never had this problem before.
5) Once I change the file path from UNC to local, I can't change it back (I can press OK but the file path does not persist).
6) Reproduced on multiple PC and windows installs.
7) Antivirus has been uninstalled.

BTW the server share accessed via UNC is a Synology Diskstation. No issue with disk space.

Very strange...!

Thx

OK some progress...

I mapped Z:\ to  \\myserver\music\cd, pointed the rip destination to the Z drive, and this works fine with FLAC.

So why the heck does the UNC path no longer work, and why can't I enter it into the field for the rip location? (like I was able to do before).

Thx

So I'm stuck.

Is it possible somebody could test (use this test case).
For each step please make sure the values you entered do not change afterwards...

a) Start MC.

b) Tools -> Options -> File Location -> Audio CD (Rips and Podcasts).... Change folder path to a local drive for ripping (e.g. C:\TEMP). Click OK twice.

c) Tools -> Options -> File Location -> Audio CD (Rips and Podcasts).... Change folder path to a UNC for ripping (e.g. \\192.168.1.30\Music\MyCD). Click OK twice.

d) Close and then Open MC.

e) Repeat steps (b) + (c).

f) See if you can rip a disc to your UNC path (Flac).

Let me know the version you tested it under... thx!

I ripped a DVD today using DVDFab to the exact same path, no issues.
The more I look at this the more I think it's an issue with the application and not my environment, can somebody look at the steps in at my test case pretty please?

I routinely rip CDs on my Win 7 and 10 PCs directly to flac files on my NAS using a UNC path and MC.  It works fine for me.  In fact, I don't think I've ever ripped directly to the local PC drive since I started using MC.

Same here..It's worked before as I said.
This is only a very recent issue.

What version of MC are you running please?
(Have you done it recently).

Well this issue finally got fixed on several of my machines when I updated to Windows 10 build 21H1.
