Improving movie lookup search results?
« on: November 22, 2020, 04:38:13 am »

Is there a way to do a more refined search via the movie lookup? or to enter a known ID directly? It's a small proportion of films for which just entering the name doesn't produce a hit but it's annoying there seems to be no workaround.

Example

https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/517468-la-verite

- search for "The Truth" = many films that contain the term "truth", no sign of this film
- search for "la verite" = fewer hits but still not finding this particular film

Using themoviedb directly and searching for "the truth y:2019" is sufficient to reduce the possible matches to <20 - https://www.themoviedb.org/search?query=the%20truth%20y%3A2019

I imagine the root cause is the poor quality of search results on themoviedb for such queries but still would be nice to have a way to workaround this (or perhaps there is one and I don't know what it is)

I found https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=120173.0 which talks about the same problem

the implemented solution seems fairly obtuse to me, I think the current search dialog could be made easier to use/more user friendly (add a way to search within the results, add a filter to choose which sources to look at) without becoming more complicated to use. It would also be so much more obvious if you just added a box like "no results found? enter the imdb id here". Instead the chosen path is general confusion for the user (unless they go searching for workarounds), why hide features like this?
