Windows 10 audio drivers...
« on: December 08, 2020, 02:24:28 pm »

Bonjour à tous, hi...
Since I upgraded my MOBO, I am a bit confused about the audio drivers I have access to.
I am using a digital interface (Audio GD DI) to feed the SPDif input of my DAC (Metric Halo ULN-2) but the Audio GD native audio drivers are from the Windows 8 era (no update exists).
When I look into the audio devices menu, I have these (*see attachments). And to be honest, I have all sorts of problems I did not have with my old mobo.
I've read that Asio4all was not very good. In my configuration, only DirectSound seems to be working, but JRiver cannot have exclusive access to it and I am not sure about the sound quality.
Would you have any advice for me?

DirectSound goes through the Windows mixer, so it's not bit-perfect output. For exclusive (and bit-perfect output) you'll probably want to use WASAPI and make sure exclusive mode is enabled.

P.S. I would highly recommend uninstalling ASIO4ALL since it's not actually ASIO at all, it's a wrapper for kernel streaming which is an old legacy Windows API that's long been depreciated and should've been removed from Windows ages ago.

Sticking with WASAPI is the best option, in my opinion.

Thanks a lot. I will experiment with this.
I noticed that my new MOBO (Gigabyte B450 AORUS) has a SPDif header. Maybe I will skip the Audio GD DI and see how it works and sounds.
