Adding Chromium (crash)
« on: October 17, 2020, 04:42:51 am »

Hi,

Every time I install a new version of Media Center I run into a bug and subsequent crash. I think it has happened at least since version 20.

I reinstall a new version of MC and deinstall the old one. I then double click a song and the software shows a pop-up saying: Adding Chromium Components (or something like that). Then it crashes.

To work around this, I select the Internet Explorer setting as webbrowser engine and play one song. After the current playing now list has finished playing, I can switch to Chromium without a problem. It seems to hang (get stuck) for a while, but it then works.

Similar problem here

The previous version was configured for chromium. When upgrading to MC27 it automatically tries to 'Add required component... Chromium'. It hangs since more than 30 Minutes. Also canceling does not work.

I've always left mine on 'Internet Explorer'.

Many many users choose Chromium. What are the differences? Are there benefits to choosing Chromium over Internet Explorer?

I only ask because I'm curious and might learn something. There seems to be a steady stream of issues with the Chromium options, but never any posts regarding issues with the Internet Explorer.... so, why Chromium?

I was wrong. MC25 is running on Internet Explorer.

I uninstalled MC27 and deleted the '\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 27' folder
After a restart I installed MC27 again.

Same problem as before. I can't do anything, it starts adding Chromium. This never comes to an end and cannot be canceled.

I have no need for a specific engine. I don't know where this preference is stored.

I don't know where this preference is stored.
Options > Tree & View > Web Browser > Engine

Tip: just type Engine into the search bar at the bottom of the options screen.

That could be a Microsoft security software issue, denying the download.

Yep, it's probably caused by the Windows Firewall being misconfigured for Media Center.

Internet Explorer is dead now. Microsoft has already said Internet Explorer is depreciated and they're planning on getting rid of it completely and replacing it fully with Microsoft Edge. Media Center uses Internet Explorer via WebView (if I recall correctly) which is likely going to be removed at some point from the OS, but Microsoft has released WebView2 based on Edge, so it should be possible at some point to replace Internet Explorer with Edge in Media Center.

Got it!

I had to delete also the MC27 program folder after uninstall. Then after fresh install it started with Internet Explorer engine.

@marko: Changing this setting from within MC was impossible because it was blocked immediatly at startup.

Don't know why that setting is blocked because I'm able to swap between both Engines on my Desktop and Laptop. And I only installed MC27 on the Laptop earlier this week to help with the testing of a TrackInfo plugin I'm developing.

It's "downloading chromium" info window which is blocking access to GUI as it keeps pushing itself front.
This situation can happen at startup if MC opens with active view which requires browser to display the contents and browser engine cannot be updated for some reason.
Don't remember if is there a registry key or some resource file for browser engine which can be set to "internet explorer" so one can start up MC if that blocking situation occurs.

The browser engines that MC uses don't automatically update themselves.

If one has set browser engine as chromium before and there is an update available for the enigne and MC tries to open view which uses the engine then MC will try to update used engine automatically. It might also happen only when MC updates itself but anyway user has no control over it.

I should note: I get this problem too, and I DO have MC's various processes excluded in Windows Defender. I've never been able to use the Chromium engine reliably. It'll work for me once, and then get blocked on a different machine.

I've never been able to figure it out. The issues have persisted for many, many versions of MC.
