Video playback via DLNA stops and starts
« on: December 12, 2020, 04:17:01 pm »

Hello:
Amd 27.0.39 and maybe  2 prior versions,
dvd, bluray, including uhd movies will just freeze, and then continues.
The freezing sometimes lasts for about 90 seconds,at times 4 minutes.
Regardless what the playback device is, Nvidia pro and non pro, even directly from the Sony Bravia, the freezing of videos  now makes movie watching a not too good experience.
Thanks.

Disk read retries due to a dying hard drive can cause this exact symptom.

Try copying one of your video files to a different drive and playing it from there.

Thanks for your response.
On this server, I have 4 external RAID boxes, two are new, also brand new 8 , 10, 12 tera drives.
I have tried playing mkv movies from most of the drives.
If any drive is bad, you will be  alerted by Ubuntu...Disk and Gparted.
Ubuntu 20.10 installed on Samsung Evo pro SSD.
For a ripped dvd not to play smoothly, is surprising.
Out of 2600 + mkvs, only 12 are dvds, and  tried playing dvs, after 1080p uhd,and Dolby vision titles  failed to play smoothly.
update:
My audio --- flac is also plagued
with this stop and continue problem.
I now remember a while ago, I reported this issue both on the forum and in
PM.

Thanks again.
George.

Hello:
Another thread but related to my earlier post.

I installed Kodi on my bravia, then connected via Mo4media.
Gloria Estephan, dvd.

Kodi reported --- "Source too slow"
I also tried bluray 1080p, and a few uhds mkv.
All type of movies reported same error.

This server is an amd 64 has Intel 6950x cpu with 128 gig of memory and Nvidia 2080ti.
It looks like info is not being read quickly.

On this new Ubuntu server, I did not notice this read error regarding slow read .
In fact , in the past, I have bragged on the  smooth playback on this box since  December of 2019 when it was launched.

Thanks .
George.

Do you have the problem when you play on the server itself?

If it happens on the server, it could be a hardware problem, as wer suggested.

If it doesn't, then the network could be the problem.  You could try substituting a different server in the same location, just to test.

128GB of memory is unusual.

Is it similar to this problem?

https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,127858.0.html

Hello Sir:
Mine is a bit similar.
I have my dolby vision mkvs in 3 separate drives, external, stored in drive bays with USB 3.0 or 3.1,
The Hardware Raid 4  , external , 2 with USB 3.0, and 2 Esata.
With Udisk, if any drive is faulty, it will complain, and mounting will be erratic, delaying the boot up process.
I have in the past experienced this behavior.
As far as I know, off recent, I have no issues with drives.

Also, reading your link, I have the server powered to a separate A/C wall outlet.
Moreover this server has a Corsair ax-1200i Power supply. There seem to be enough power on the server.
The reason for this long winded write up is for me to trace when this issue started and how.
I know, around July 2010, wife traveled to Tennesse for the holiday. She came back very happy. While visiting her sister, She logged in to the server with MO4media, Vlc as external player, with of course cast. She was able to watch uhd movies with no issues. She talked about her experience all weeks.

(It looks like this problem started 3 or 4 versions ago.)

Then around August, makemkv made it possible for us to rip dolby vision. I have to re-rip  more than 160 titles. So with Dolby vision possible, and Nvidia shield pro in the house, and Bravia 2019 uhd tvs available, we were in Dolby vision heaven. We watched all the Transformer mkvs in Dolby vision via dlna with no buffering and freezing. Wife even complained about the brightness of these movies. This was in September thru October. We also watched other uhd titles.

(I must mention that this server  has a Wifi 6.. RAX 200  Netgear router connected to it. Its signal strength is 1300 mbps, plus  the wired connection from Spectrum ISP.).
Nvidia shield Pro and the non Pro reports "signal " excellent most of the time, and a few time
 with, "Good", signal strength.

A few days ago, I decided to install Kodi. With Kodi,  used as an external playback engine via Moamedia,  the error message "Slow source" keeps coming up. There were a few more info besides this: My CPU on this server is Intel 6950X quad core.Kodi reports on the screen:
cpu #0 ... 0.0%, cpu #1 ... 0.0%, cpu #2 .. 0.0%, and the   last cpu reads .. cpu #3..(KODI CPU ) reads 20, 30, 40, 50...xx% utilization.

It looks like only the 4th core of the cpu is in use.

MC installed on SSD Samsung Evo Pro, with this memory 128 gig, Nvidia RTX 2080 -tI in Nvlink mode,  Corsair 1200 watts power suply,  coupled with Wifi 6. and giga ethernet, nothing should hold down this server.
(This is one of two servers that I built with "ANGER" to showcase JRiver MC., and JRiver for Android . The second server is a desktop,.. Origen  S21T touch screen with 12 inch video screen, RTX 2080 super, 24 gig of memory).
Coming back to the Goliathlinux server, with this configuration , There is no reason whatsoever for a dvd mkv movie  not to play smoothly. I also loaded or tried playing via MO4media thru Kodi, with same result " Slow Source".
With his observation, I do not think the problem is network related.
What I see on the screen is just a pause from  30 seconds to about 3 or 4 minutes in some cases. When playing any of this title, the screen refreshes so fast, then after a while is a "no go"
With this server equipped with plenty of memory, and graphic power.. nothing should slow it down
MC engine should be able to "ROAM" about in that vast pool of memory without any constraint.
You also suggested that I try another server.
I could, but my Asus AIO Windows server also running MC is not available. Windows 10 update, several months ago screwed up the server. I began experiencing "Network Socket" problems. Attempts to rectify via the BIOS has failed so far.
I have log txt I do not know if it helps . I will send the  log to Bob.

Thanks.

Hello:
Moderator, please move to old thread if need be.
Nativity story 1080P:
Kodi still reported "Source Read "  too slow.
I remember every holiday, wife will watch this video and a few religion related types with no issues.
Now nothing plays smoothly.
The first 9 minutes 10 seconds of playback, the movie stopped 5 times.
Twice, the stops lasted 3+ minutes.
Please let me know if a fix is applied in future updates.
Another concerns, though unrelated:
Any multi user login capability?
I think the Windows version does  have this feature.
Thanks.

Please re-read the suggestions above.  I don't think there is currently a JRiver problem that would explain this.

Hello:
I think there is a problem.
The problem was fixed about  48 hiurs ago.
Here is how  I got it fixed.

I remembered my wife and I had one or two marathon occasions, just dedicated to watching movies, with no hiccup, then I tried to pinpoint the date.

It was around October, so this enabled me to fetch media center that was released around that time.
I installed MC 27.0.20.

On my Bravia 930D,with Nvidia Shield non pro, I was able to watch:
Nativity story.. Kodi still throws error.. Source  Read is too slow.
Also I noticed MEM ..display was twice as fast when compared to when I ran MC on 27.0.39 or newer.
The good news is that playback continued for about 39 minutes with one 5 second "stop"
I then continued to play Yanni live 1080p concerts very smoothly.
I also used vlc to watch 3:10 to Yuma, uhd and  standard bluray with no issue.
I then tested playback on Bravia 2019 that can handle Dolby vision, using Nvidia shield pro.
Every dolby vision I tested played flawlessly at least for 30 minutes with no "stop and g".

I wrote to ask if multi session feature is currently possible, but got no answer. please advice if it will be feasible in the future.
lt looks like MC 27.0.39, and MC 27.0.45 do contain bug that is causing video and audio to stop and go, but MC 27.0.20 does not have this problem.

What is the video conversion set to?

It's still possible that antivirus is causing problems with one build (or more) but not with another.

What is MEM display?

Hello:
MEM is the Kodi's GUI for displaying memory
on a system.
With MC rev 39 and 45, the display was fast
But with MC rev 20, the display was twice as fast.
On media network for each MC's revision, I have audio not to convert, image -- original, video -- original.
I also made sure I enabled  hardware acceleration.
Also, during the  four weeks of fighting with this issue, I have disabled on the OS. Ubuntu 20.10 the daily and weekly updates, yet no luck.
I did not think Linux  OS has virus installed with the system.
I know I have not installed any virus program.
I am still enjoying movies with no hiccup.
I have some surprising (good news)  for you.
This is not the time to make it public.
Shall we take this private. ?
If private, it will include a suggestion, and may
on the long run benefit you.
Thanks.
